Hey guys! The end of this was inspired by the amazing fanfiction "WonderWalls" So I would like to mention that! Go check it out, it's amazing! But sorry this is so boring :(
Newt doesn't raise his gaze as Kayla comes jogging over.
She grabs a long knife from the sheath on Newt's back and crouches down next to him, slamming the knife into the same root he was, trying to uproot the trunk of the stubborn stump.
15 minutes pass by, Newt still not looking at her.
He keeps his gaze low, roughly digging his dulled from age machete into the side of the stump and Kayla can't help but feel worried as he forcefully rips out a root with it, throwing it to the side.
"Hey...are you-"
"I'm fine."
She sighs, stabbing her knife into the ground and getting up, Newt had already ripped out the roots they needed.
She folds her arms across her chest and walks over to where Chuck and Thomas were sitting and talking, next to the hammocks.
"Hey..."
Thomas pushes himself to his feet, stepping over to her. Chuck gets up as well, straightening the belt on his pants.
Thomas narrows his chocolate brown eyes.
"You okay?"
She shrugs, then nods.
"Yeah, it's just Newt...he's being moody."
Thomas looks over her shoulder at the blonde british boy, who is currently peeling the bark off of a root they sliced, sitting down and leaning against the stump.
"It's..probaby because of me...you two are together so I shouldn't-"
"Woah, woah, wait, no we aren't together."
Thomas's eyes flash confusion and then something else she can't pin point.
"Oh. Sorry."
Kayla shakes her head.
"It's fine I mean, Newt would never like someone like me."
She laughs slightly, sitting down on the grass, criss-crossed.
Chuck eyes them both.
"Okay...I'm gonna go..."
He turns around and runs over to Alby, who is climbing up the Lookout.
Thomas sits down next to her, the two teens leaning on a wooden post holding the hammocks up.
"What do you mean 'someone like you'?"
She smirks again and looks at him.
"Have you seen me? My hair, my face, my body, my-"
"Wait, your body?"
He emphasizes the last part and Kayla flips her hair over her head, tying the blonde waves into a pony.
"Just...forget it."
She tucks her knees to her chest and lays her hands on her stomach.
Thomas looks to her.
"Well, just so you know, your actually very-"
"HEY THOMAS! OVER HERE!"
Both of them turn their heads to the right and see Gally standing next to the Food Shack, waving his hand, a glare on his face.
Thomas looks back to her.
"Uh, I should probably-"
"Yeah you should probably go..."
Thomas gets up and runs over to Gally, leaving Kayla to sit and think.
She exhales slowly, lowering her gaze, and tucks her knees closer to her chest, fiddling with her fingers.
After about a few minutes, Newt looks up from the stump and worry flashes across his face.
He slides his machete back into the sheath and places the root on the ground, quickly limping across the Glade.
"Hey, hey, hey, whats wrong?"
Kayla looks up at him.
"What do you mean."
"You-you're crying."
She raised a hand and feels under her eyes. It grows wet with tears. She hadn't noticed.
"Uh, nothing...I'm-I'm actually uh... fine I dont know... what...why I was crying..."
Newt still has worry on his face and he sits down next to her left side, his shoulder touching hers, one knee up and one down.
"I'm sorry I've been a jerk I just have a lot on my mind..."
Kayla nods.
"I get it."
Newt looks over to her.
"Kk is getting old, don't you think?"
"Hm?"
"You know, the nickname."
"I-I guess."
He stares at her for another moment and then smiles.
"Got it."
"What are you thinkin'?"
"Warrior."
Kayla's face twists in confusion.
"Warrior?"
"Yeah. I like it... Warrior."
She shrugs.
"Whatever floats your boat."
He laughs and uses his right arm to rub her back, sending waves of chills down her spine.
"Well, I gotta get back to work. Stay strong, my little warrior."
With grin and a chuckle, Newt was limping back over to the gardens.
The chills don't go away.
Warrior...
