"Hey, hey John." I grab his arm to turn him around. He gives me a puzzled look.
"Listen if you don't want me to read the text messages then fine here delete them." I hand the phone to him.
"Hurry up and take it before I change my mind." If he doesn't take the phone in the next three seconds I will read the messages. He then takes the phone and just stares at it.
"No Ariah I can't do that." What?
"What? What do you mean? You said you don't want me to read the messages so just delete them." I'm starting to get frustrated now.
"Well now I want you to read the messages....they ah umm just read them please." Then he walks back inside the house. He is one strange kid. But now thinking about it I'm glad he told me to read them. I eagerly look at the first message...*listen you better stop flirting with Ariah, she is mine! I already told you that...don't go winking at her and think that I wouldn't notice.*
I read the second text next...
*you don't have to act like she's invisible she wouldn't like that...just don't go flirting with her.*I read the text messages over and over again. The butterflies are fighting to come out of my stomach. I can't help at smile. He likes me. He likes me. I thought maybe he didn't like me and just thought of me as a friend. But now everything is starting to show, how he holds me, how he talks to me, his winks, and his forehead kiss. I feel bad for Tony but I can't feel that bad. I want John not Tony.
I walk back into the house and no one looks in my direction except John. I give him a big smile and sit next to him. He lets out a big breath as if he was relived as I grab his hand. He leans in to whisper something into my ear.
"Your not mad are you?" I look into his sorrowful eyes as if he did something wrong. I want to kiss him. I want to take away any pain that he is feeling right now. But I can't . I decide against myself and smile and nod my head 'no'. Even in this dimly lit room I can see the dimples in his cheeks as he brightly smiles. I squeeze his hand in reassurance and he squeezes back. A girl with jet black hair stands up and tries to talk over the noise
"Who wants to tell a 'scary story'?" A few people laugh and some say they hate scary stories because they're never scary enough. Tony stands up and say that he has a good one. Of course. He grabs a flash light from one of his friends and holds it under his chin.
"It was a night just like this...."
His story was so boring and lacked so much detail. He did have a couple funny parts but it was terrible. John leaned in and whispered into my ear."I bet if you were to tell a story it would be better." I'm not sure if he was joking or not but I took up his offer. I stood up and cleared my throat.
"Ok imma tell a story." John looked at me with wide eyes along with some of my friends. I hear a couple of 'Who is that?' and 'she was here the whole time?' I brushed off the comments and started the story. Tony then threw me the flashlight which I almost missed."There were a group of teenagers who decided it would be fun to stay the night at an abandoned house. " I heard a couple hoops and howlers.
"They all brought pillows and blankets to get comfortable. The idea was just to see who would get scared the most after a couple of hours. One kid named Jeff had a bright idea. He thought it would be fun to play hide and go seek through out the house. The rest of the house agreed. One girl named Chelsea said 'not too long because it's starting to get dark' they ignored her and went to hide. Amber volunteered to be the seeker so she stood in the living room. She counted to one minute and started moving towards the kitchen. She looked under the sink cabinets and in the kitchen closet. She heard a loud thud and turned around sharply. But of course there was nothing behind her. She moved to the dinning room and looked under the kitchen table. She heard another noise but it wasn't a thud like before it was more like a scream, but sounded very distant. She yelled out to her friends 'that's not funny guys!' The noise happened again but this time the sound wasn't that far. She thought maybe the sound was coming from upstairs so she climbed the stairs in hope for finding the culprit. The stairs creaked from under her shoes. She couldn't help it but the goosebumps started to rise on her arms. The hair on the back of her neck rose as she reached to open one of the bed room doors. Right when she was about to open the door she heard a...."As if on cue on of the girls in the group screamed. Half of the kids around the circle screamed in unison. I couldn't help it but laugh. I laughed until my stomach hurt. A few other people laughed along with me while the others yelled out that it wasn't that funny. The girl with the jet black hair stands and speaks.
"That story was way better than Tony's." I then felt instantly guilty as Tony's face fell but he tried to cover it up by smiling. I sit back down next to John, he instantly grabbed my hand in his. He starts rubbing circles with his thumb along my hand. I love his gentle touch. After ten more minutes of talking everyone decides to go back to Tony's house.
By the time we get there it's dark and the bonfire is already lit. Tony's parents sit next to the fire and instantly is get nervous.
"So where have you been?" Tony's dad asks. He looks like Tony a lot, they share the same features. They have the same nose and they seem to bite their nails just as much.
"Oh we just walked and hung out." Tony replies nonchalantly. I guess we are keeping the abandoned house a secret.
"Oh ok well me and your dad brought out s'mores...if you guys would like some." His mother smiles towards us. His mother looks nothing like Tony, she has red hair when Tony and his father have black. The fire seems to brighten her eyes and they come out being bright green. Tony has dark brown eyes, but I can't see his fathers. They seem very nice and down to earth.Everyone gathers around the fire and starts eating. I personally don't like graham crackers so I just eat the chocolate and marshmallows. John isn't sitting next to me, instead he's sitting with his friends. Kennedy scoots over to me.
"So how come your boyfriend isn't sitting with you?" She gives me her creepy smile.
"He's not my boyfriend..." What are we then? I want him to be my boyfriend but I don't want to tell anyone that. Not yet anyway.
