The kart came to a screeching halt as Illumi pulled one of the levers... Maybe it was the... Nevermind...
Hisoka could see a short length of upward stairs, lit up by what was seemingly sunlight... The stairs seemed almost reflective... were they covered with ice?
Illumi opened his own door, and Hisoka, his. They walked up the bright stairs, the sun beating down on their pale white skin.
"Here we are..." Illumi told Hisoka, standing before the town...
Hisoka grew up here...
he had spent most of his childhood here...
but it was all so different...
"Nice Chinoakuma costume!" A child called out to Hisoka from afar... The child approached.
"It could use more blood though... and maybe some more rags would do... Overall though, I rate your costume 7/10." The child said as he examined Hisoka.
"I'm not wearing a costume, little boy... But do you think I'd look scarier covered in blood?" Hisoka told the little boy as he bent over the little boy, eyes wide and smiling, bearing his sharp teeth as he did so.
"AHHHH!!!! ITS THE REAL CHINOAKUMA!!! EVERYBODY RUN!!!" The child ran to his older siblings.
"Its him!! The Chinoakuma!! Hes over there!!" The child begged his brothers to look.
"you idiot, the chinoakuma isnt real. grow up."
The child began to weep as his older brothers pushed around and teased him.
"Chi... No... Akuma??" That means blood demon... the child was right.
"Illumi... Whats the Chinoakuma?" Hisoka asked, looking over his shoulder in Illumis direction.
"It's nothing but a stupid myth to scare children. Sure, a few people have gone missing in the woods, but theres no chance a demon could've taken them." Illumi said, sounding quite bored with the topic. "Kids have come home screaming to their parents saying they saw a mauled dead body, but that doesn't point to the possibility that there's a demon in the woods. The body sightings were probably all just remnants of animals eaten by other animals." Illumi turned an eye to Hisoka. "It's true though... You do look a bit like Chinoakuma."
Hisoka...
He was the Chinoakuma...
Those bodies were all human...
The child was right...
"well how does the chinoakuma appear in illustrations?" Hisoka asked.
"Follow me." Illumi told Hisoka, swiftly walking into the village.
He stopped at what looked like an artists shop, where he looked around the artists display board.
"There. in the top right corner."
Illumi pointed to a portrait of a horrific humanoid creature on all fours. It had horns and shoulder-length hair like Hisokas... It had pale white skin like Hisoka too... Its yukata was more ragged and torn... almost like it had been burned... The pattern was similar to one that Hisoka had stolen once... It had glowing yellow eyes, a long pointy tongue and its teeth were like the teeth of a lion. Long, jagged and unkept. Hisokas teeth weren't that bad... were they? The creature was holding something... It looked like a human heart. Blood ran down the creatures face. It had long claws and dog-like legs.
"Ah! That's my Chinoakuma portrait." The artist had returned to his shop. "I must say... it is very lifelike, isn't it." The artist continued. "A friend of mine claims to have seen the thing for real... Of course, I believe he saw something... But I don't believe it was a demon that he saw... I decided I'd ask him what it was he saw, so I could draw it for him... He said it was wearing a yukata! Sounds ridiculous doesn't it. Anyway... I just thought I'd provide a more realistic depiction on the monster." The artist looked Hisoka up and down
"you look a bit like him, don't you." The artist smiled.
"Ahh... I seem to be getting that a lot lately, don't I?... How much do you want for it?" Hisoka asked the artist.
"Oh, this piece is not for sale."
"Hm?"
"This piece is one of a kind... But... I'll make a deal for eight hundred yen..."
"eight hundred, huh?" Hisoka breathily sighed. He had completely forgotten anything and everything he had learned about money...
"Will this do?" Hisoka pulled out a heavily stained burlap bag that smelled of death.
The artist was taken aback by Hisoka's gesture.
With his long pointy fingers, Hisoka reached into the bag and pulled out an old rotten piece of meat.
It didn't take long for the artist to realize this hunk of rotten meat was human...
"GAHH!!! WH- WHERE DID YOU GET THAT- WHY DO YOU HAVE IT- I-" The artist screamed, jumping nearly 5 feet into the air.
"A human heart is worth quite a lot isn't it?" Hisoka said, rather confused at the artists reaction.
Quick enough, the artist ran away, screaming, alerting the villagers.
"I wonder what his deal was..."
Illumi and Hisoka both decided that they'd had enough of the village for one day...
"It's strange..." Illumi stated, climbing back into the rickety carriage, Hisoka following behind him.
"I've never seen the villagers acting this way before." He continued, the carriage rattling and the machine hissing as steam exited its pipes.
"Well... It's certainly been fun for me." Hisoka added.
"You know, Illumi..."
People are strange...
