"Chase me!!" a little boy squealed as he ran from his friend, kicking up snow as he walked.

"TAG!! You're it!" His friend yelled.

"you're really good at this, Hisoka,"

"Thanks, Haruto! I bet you'll be better someday... but you'll never be as good as me! ... OW!" Hisoka yelped. Haruto had punched him right in the gut. "What was that for?"

"You haven't earned any bragging rights yet," Haruto said, jokingly as he walked towards his own house.

"Wanna sleepover?" He asked.

"Uhh... I've gotta get back home. There's something important going on. " Hisoka added, walking in the other direction. It was getting pretty dark out...

The small town they lived in had many legends and stories... One of which was quite real... It was said that a demon lived in the woods... Nobody knew what it did... or how it survived... All they knew, was that it was seeking a target... No one knew what this target was going to be. Was it a dog? A tree? A house? ... Perhaps it was human flesh...

Hisoka wasn't quite well informed of this demon. As far as he knew, it wasn't anything more than a stupid myth. He was 10 years old. Way too old to believe in garbage like that.

Nonetheless, he still obeyed the rules. You have to be asleep by 10, You have to be home by 7, you can't leave the house until 8 am... The demon wasn't anything more than a myth to scare children into following rules... Or at least that's what Hisoka believed...

By the time he had gotten home, everyone was already asleep... IT WAS ONLY 8:00! ... stupid rules. It doesn't matter how late you stay up, as long as you got to sleep eventually. Hisoka lived with his family in a small log cabin in a lower-middle-class town. Life wasn't that hard... But it was probably significantly harder than how the Zoldycks had it. They were a huge family who lived in a mansion up on the hill, about a few miles from Hisoka's town. He had never seen the mansion before... Only heard about it. It was described to have marble floors, gold pillars... Hisoka had never even seen gold before...

He always wondered what it looked like. Someone had told him that gold was yellow and that marble was white. Yellow and white? That makes it sound like it looks like piss and snow... and that never looks nice.

Since the mansion was a couple of miles from Hisoka's town and separated by thick woods, Hisoka had never been able to walk to see it. He wished he could... It sounded amazing... Other than the fact that marble and gold probably looked like piss and snow.

Hisoka's mind raced with every thought he could ever think. Why? He never knew why... All he knew was that it always kept him awake for too long.

Eventually, Hisoka drifted off to sleep...

He slept...

Until...

Something in the trees. It moved.

Hisoka awoke. He looked out his window at the position of the moon... It was about 4:00 am by the look of it.

Something moved again... This time the sound was louder... much louder... It sounded almost like a tree had snapped and crashed down...

He got up out of bed to investigate. He put on his jacket, and boots and hat and went outside. It was almost pitch black and he could almost feel his heart beating out of his chest. His hands were shaking in the cold... But he still wanted to find out what was making all that noise.
