Chapter Twenty-Nine: Trust No One
Felicity
"Felicity."
The first thing I feel is excruciating pain--courtesy of my wounded arm, followed by a deep, relentless anger as my brain recalls what happened.
The sun is already shining brightly outside, illuminating the carnage. There's blood everywhere, most of which in a puddle beside Edward's corpse. Myla and Dr. Roberto's bodies are nowhere to be found. I'm about to ask Ian about their whereabouts but he cuts me off.
"God, Felicity," he exclaims in relief. A thin sheet of sweat covers his face and neck, his eyes wide and his breathing heavy, as if he just came out of a marathon. Tinulungan niya akong makaupo bago muling magsalita. "For a moment I thought you were..."
Dead. The beast's body is only a few feet from where I sit, knife still protruding from its body.
The dog took a large chunk of flesh on my right arm. It already stopped bleeding, but I can literally see my bone through the blood and gore. It's a miracle that I hadn't bled to death.
"Hey," he says gently, willing me to look into his eyes. "I'm here. You're okay now."
He takes off his shirt, rips it in half, and uses it to cover my wound. As his gentle hands work, my gaze drifts towards Edward's body. His eyes are still staring at the ceiling, his lips formed into a permanent smile. Even in death, he managed to look evil.
Those aliens... They are more advanced than we originally thought. The fact that they can transfer their consciousness to a human being confirms the fact that there are so many things that we still don't know about them.
Ian finishes dressing my wound with a knot. When he looks up, he immediately notices my expression.
"What is it?" he asks.
"Jack's awake," he says grimly.
Puno ng kalungkutan at paghihinagpis ang palahaw. I want to cover my ears and close my eyes, to will my brain to conjure up happy thoughts just so I could forget the tragedy that had happened last night. But I know, deep inside, that I need to listen.
