After a long time of waiting, the group of friends were finally old enough to enlist themselves into the Trainee Corps so that they could become Scouts. Cal had changed over that time. He had cut his hair after Eren had commented that his hair was gonna annoy him, which he could agree on. He did end up getting a scar from the piece of rubble that cut the side of his neck during the Colossal Titan attack.
He didn't go anywhere without his ring or his dagger and he always kept his sister's ribbon wrapped around the handle of his dagger or his wrist when he wasn't training. Cal had become slightly protective of his friends after Shiganshina. He thought it might have just been because he was so used to being so overprotective of his sister, Caroline, that when she died, that when she died, he became overprotective of the only people he had left.
Now, he was lined up with many other cadets, his hands behind his back whilst a booming voice spoke to them from in front of them.
"We now begin the enlistment ceremony for the 104th Trainee Corps!" A bald man from the front shouted, "I am Keith Shadis, and I have the misfortune to be assigned to train you bastards."
Cal frowned at his words but decided to just not think about it, as it was what he expected from a man who was told he had to train the next group of soldiers.
"And I'm not here to welcome you at all! Right now you're mere cattle fit for nothing but Titan food! No less than cattle..." He continued as everyone in the crowd didn't take their gaze off of whoever was in front of them. For Cal, it was a tall blonde boy who stood next to a black-haired boy, who was a few inches taller. From Cal's perspective, the blonde in front of him was only a few inches taller than him, seeing as Cal was now 5'9.5.
"In three years, we'll take you worthless pieces of crap and train you! Give you the means to fight the Titans. In three years, when you stand before a Titan, will you still be food? Or will you be a noble wall, shielding the King? Or perhaps, one of humanity's glorious soldiers that Slay Titans? You will decide!"
That was who Eren, Mikasa, Cal and Armin were going to be. Soldiers who slay Titans. This time though, their priority wasn't only to slay Titans but to take back their home as well. They knew that ever since they all promised to stick together, they would take back Shiganshina together.
All of a sudden, Shadis walked up to Armin and stood tall in front of him.
"You there!" He yelled.
"Yes sir!" Armin replied as he saluted him by putting his right fist on his heart.
"Who are you?" Shadis asked as he leaned forward, slightly intimidating Armin.
