The ball was soon. In a half hour to be exact. I sat on my bed, my leg shaking from anxiousness. "Calm yourself down y/n. This will be fine," I mumble to myself. But the words I told myself did nothing. I was still really anxious. I stood up and walked over towards the tall mirror that laid against the wall.
"This is it. I am ready," I clenched the mask in my hand. I was trying to mentally prepare myself when I heard a knock on the door. "Come in," I said quietly, still loud enough for them to hear me, but not any louder than that.
Abby opened the door and took a couple steps in before addressing me, "Y/N It is time for the ball. The royal majesty will have a grand entrance, after which he must dance with some very important officials. You may dance with him afterwards, but until then you may do whatever you please inside of the ball as long as it doesn't cause a ruckus. Also please wear your mask and try to blend in. I will step outside and wait for you to come out. Once you do I shall lead you to the ball. Understood?"
That was a lot of information to take in. All i could manage to do was nod slowly and mumble, "Yes," quietly. Abby closed the door and I went back to looking in the mirror. I carefully took the mask and placed it on my face. I looked.... decent enough. At least I hoped so. I gave myself one last pep talk before opening the door.
"Follow me," Abby instructed. I trailed behind her carefully, making sure not to trip on my heels. I never wore heels. I mean why would I? I've never done anything fancy before so there'd never been a need to. It will take awhile to get used to walking in them.
We eventually made it to the outside of the ballroom. The side door was closed and I was about to go in when Abby stopped me, "Y/N, don't make a fool of yourself. The entire kingdom is depending on The Royal Majesty's success with both the partnerships and the future queen's ability to protect them."
"Don't worry, I won't," I was beginning to calm down as I heard the music and people talking. Nobody would even notice me there. I didn't dress too extravagant, which was a good thing. Abby then opened the door and I slipped inside.
It was beautiful. The room was white with intricate gold details engraved in the wall. White roses and beautiful ancient greek statues decorated the room. It looked like something straight out of a fairytale.
"Do you like the ballroom? I quite like it, however it makes me jealous I don't have one similar," a voice started talking to me. I looked over at who was speaking. He was a tall-ish man with brown hair and green eyes. He had a silver mask on and a black suit with silver details. As well as.. cat ears? Actually, the cat ears were really cute. I hadn't met a cat person yet but they seem nice. Or at least this one did.
"Umm, yeah. The ballroom is very pretty," I responded, trying to match the volume he spoke at. "You seem like this is your first time in the kingdom's ballroom. Is it?"
"Yeah, actually it is."
"You can stick with me tonight if you'd like. I get pretty bored at these places but I have to attend."
"Okay, sure!" Sweet, I don't have to wander around anxiously anymore.
"Alright. Would you care to dance?" he asked me with his hand presented outward for he me to grab.
"I've never danced before, I don't think I would be very good at it," I laughed nervously.
He smiled, "No worries, I'll teach you. It's not too hard."
"Okay, you've convinced me," I grabbed his hand and he led me out onto the dance floor. He placed my hand on his shoulder before putting his on my waist.
Our other hands intertwined as we stepped in sync. I was looking at my feet, trying not to step on his as he spoke to me,"Hey, It's alright. You don't need to look at your feet the whole time."
"Oh umm... okay," I looked up from my feet.
"How has your day been?"
"Oh it's been... hectic."
"How so?"
"Oh just new experiences."
"Ah, yeah that can be stressful."
Oops, I stepped on his foot, "Sorry."
"It's alright," he smiled at me again. He was so polite. Much more than Ed was.
"When will E- I mean The King get here?"
"Oh are you a fan of his?"
"Not really, i'm just curious."
"Well, he'll probably arrive either after this song, or the next."
"Okay," I awkwardly smiled.
He seemed to be more tense after I asked about Ed. Perhaps he doesn't get along with him that well.
That's not much of a surprise though. I can barely stand the guy anymore. It was like after the first day we met, he drank an annoying potion. Or I just opened my eyes and saw the real him. Whatever the case is, he's a total freak. But... there's something about him. It makes me stay. Maybe it's more the people at risk of dying then him. These people are just like me. They have lives they want to live, places they want to see. I cant just let them die.
I feel as if I keep repeating these things to myself, but deep down, it's just a lie. I want to tell myself I don't like ed but I know I really do. But this guy- I think I like him too. He's really nice to me and I'm having a lot of fun, thanks to him.
"Y/N," he whispered as the music slowed down to a stop and we stopped dancing, "The king is here."
