It has been about a week since I got hired so I was still so new to this whole thing, a lonely 13 year old girl working in the castle. I didn't make very much so it was hard but I managed. I did not fancy my work clothes very much but they were all I had. It was a spring morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the rooster crowing. My bed wasn't very comfortable, the mattress was hard as rock and the blankets where rough and itchy but I were just thankful to have a place to stay and that I were still alive after what happened with my town. I sat up and looked out my window, it was lovely. The flowers blooming, the smell of spring in the air, there was a nice breeze on this warm day making it so wonderful. It was kinda damp out which was an ideal spring morning. I got up and put on my outfit for work and I put your hair into a low messy bun.
This was my work outfit, though mine had stains on it. I didn't like tight clothes because I were insecure so I always didn't tie it very tight, though not insecure about people saying I were over weight, I didn't want them to point out how skinny I am. I don't have much money at all and I have to save it so I don't get to much food, I also have fast metabolism which didn't really help. After I did my hair and put on my dress I slipped on my shoes and headed off to the infirmary. I walked down the halls that I still didn't quite know my way around. I eventually got there and got right to work.
"Good morning" I said to Nelda cheerfully
"Good morning to you too, you seem happy today" she replied
"It's just a lovely day, its beautiful out and I still just can't believe that this is all real" I said in awe taking it all in
I quickly got to work, we didn't have any patients yet so I was just organizing, cleaning, and making some medicine. After a few hours it was about 10 am and we had a few patients come and go after a quick check up, Nelda does the check ups and that stuff since I'm only 13. While she was in the other room with a patient I found myself sitting by the window looking out, I did this a lot over the past week I'd been here. But not just for the views and the nature, but for prince Louis, he was my same age and on weekdays he always had the same schedule at about 10:30 am he would go out side for his archery lessons and sword fighting lessons.
"Looking out there again" Nelda asked from behind me, she had noticed that I was always there at the same time
"It's just so amazing out there" I said a bit frightened because she had scared me
"And would the prince happen to be out there again?" she asked with almost a smirk on her face
"Umm... yes but I mean I had hardly noticed" I was good at lying but Nelda was very wise and could see right through anyone
Nelda simply nodded slowly with a smirk letting me know she didn't believe me. I could feel myself blush. I had finished most of my work for the day so I had some off time unless a patient came. I sat back down by the window but now prince Louis was playing football (soccer) with the other princes from the different kingdoms. I sat there for a few minutes when I heard the door open, it was another person coming in for a check up and right after a kid who looked about my age walked in, his clothes were nice and I assumed he had a higher rank, he had blonde hair and bright blue eyes and his smile was so cute.
"I'm here to get medicine for princess Daisy, but I need it to be handled by a certified healer or physician" the boy said, he sounded nice and had a thick Irish accent
The law was that when it came to medicine being given to the royal family no one was allowed to give it to them unless you were certified to handle medicine. Your kingdom had a way of certification, everyone had a card with all there information on it including what your rank was, your name, what your work was, and all that
"I need to attend to this patient but y/n can go with you" Nelda said
"You are the new healer right?" He asked me
"Yes, I'm surprised you noticed" I said a little shocked
"Well I personally have so much respect for what you guys do, I like to keep myself informed when we get new staff. Shall we go?" He asked and I was taken aback, most people just treated us like crap, I nodded and grabbed the princess' medicine and me and the boy were heading though the halls, this would be my first time ever being any where near the royal quarters.
"So, how do you like it so far" he asked me
"I think it's amazing, I love it here" I said with enthusiasm
"That's what I think all the time, you'll never get used to it, I'm Niall by the way, Niall Horan" he said putting his hand out
I shook his hand " I'm y/n Crawforde, what do you do here, if you don't mind me asking" I said
"I am one of the royal servants, I work for the royal family, also if you don't mind me asking you a question, how old are you?" He asked me, he seemed very curious
"I'm 13" I said plainly
"Me too! But I'll be 14 soon" he sounded excited that he found someone his age
"Now I know someone my age" I said while laughing.
He laughed too and his laugh was almost contagious. Eventually we made it to princess Daisy's room, when we went in she was laying in bed and looked miserable. The guards had stopped me and asked for identification as the were expecting Nelda to come. I gave them my card and they looked at it and let me in. I went over to her bed and talked to her for a minute after I bowed to try and find out what was wrong.
"So, I'm here to help you. I need you to tell me how you're feeling" I asked sweetly
She was much younger than me even though I was only 13
"My throat hurts, and my head hurts a little. Is it anything too serious?" She asked, she sounded really scared and worried
"Let me give you a quick check up and I will see if I can figure it out" I smiled at her trying to make her feel more calm
This was going to be basically my first time doing a check up and diagnosing someone and of course it had to be one of the royals, I had lots of training and knowledge so I actually did really good. It seemed she had a cold. But back then, even a cold could be serious
"Alright, I'm all done. That was it, it seems you have a cold. But nothing serious you just need to take this medicine" I said as sweet as possible while giving her a bag of chewable medicine. When I handed them to her she made a face that looked like she was still kinda worried
"How bad are these?" She asked me
"They aren't the best, I had to take them when I had a cold too, but they will help and you will feel much better, you should take your first one now, and take them every morning and night. I'll stay here while you take this one if you want?" I said, I was kinda kneeling next to her bed. She smiled a little at my offer and nodded. She took the medicine and made a face of disgust
"See you did great!" I said happily "these will help you a lot"
"Thank you" she said enthusiastically but also kinda soft because she didn't feel good
Me and Niall left the room and he was walking me back down to the infirmary because I didn't know the way. We talked and eventually made it back. Nelda was waiting for me
"How did it go?" She asked me right when we walked in
"It was great, I mean not that she was sick obviously, but getting to help people. She had a cold and I gave her the medicine and comforted her while she took it because she seemed kinda worried and hesitant!" You were talking so fast because of how happy you were. Nelda and Niall could both see your excitement
"That's great y/n, I'm proud of you" Nelda said while giving me a warm smile
"I have to go now, it was lovely meeting you y/n hopefully I see you again" Niall said while exiting the infirmary.
I was so happy with the work I had done, I had unpacked the small work bag I brought up that had all my tools in it, I cleaned them and put them away, Nelda was always very strict with how neat it had to be.
"I'll tell you what, since you did such a good job. I'll let you have the rest of the day off to admire prince Louis" she said yet again with a smirk
"What!? I mean what, his schedule. He would be inside by now" right when I said that I realized that I shouldn't have
"So you pay attention to his schedule?" She said jokingly to mess with me, she laughed a little "today is there outside day, they have them every once and a while where they get to do all the fun outdoor activities instead of the normal classes" she said while putting away medicine
"Oh that's nice, they are probably under so much stress" I said
"Yes, I agree. They work those children so much. But seriously you can just relax the rest of the day" she seemed extra nice and happy today
I did what she told me, I went to the window I had always sat at. And she wasn't wrong, I wasn't looking at the view yet again. Prince Louis and the other princes were still down on the big grass field but now they were just sitting there, taking a break I was guessing. That's when I finally realized I fancied the prince. There was no way he would even know I existed and some how I now had a crush on him. It's almost like a celebrity crush. At about 8:00 pm I was able to go back to my quarter. Nelda stays longer but because I am 13 she always tells me to go at 8:00 so I can get some sleep. I made it back to my quarter and changed into my night clothes with for me was just a really big old shirt. It was somewhat like a nightgown. I just lied down on my bed and thought about how I couldn't even believe this was all real, and this was only my first week. After a while I had drifted to sleep and the next day I woke up the same as the day before with the beautiful smells and sounds of spring. It was Friday today so I was happy again. I had gotten up and did my hair the same, I put on my dress and shoes and just kinda skipped breakfast when I knew I shouldn't have. I was very smart for my age so I knew it was bad but I did it anyway. I got to the infirmary and saw Nelda already placing new paper down on the patient check up tables and getting ready for another day. I came and helped her organize some of the tools and the medicine in the medicine cabinets
"Thank you, do you think you could make some medicine today" she asked once we had finished
"Of course" I said joyfully. I actually quit enjoyed making the medicine because it was basically like a potion.
I was making the medicine after a while of stirring and adding things it was done. I put them into bottles and gave them to Nelda
"Thank you, you always do it so quickly. I guess it comes natural to you" she said quietly
Nelda was the only one in the castle that knew about my background and my parents. But she didn't know my parents were the one who were leading the attack. At about 10 am I snuck over to the window looking out to see prince Louis and the other princes on horses riding around. I could see them laughing and smiling and for some reason it made me smile. I went back to cleaning before Nelda saw me. I was sweeping the floors when a familiar voice came into the room
"Hey, I have some time off and I was bored so I can to see what you were doing" he said, I instantly knew from the Irish accent that it's was Niall
"Hey Niall, I'm just cleaning up a little. Not many people today which is a great thing. It means everyone is doing good. How's princess Daisy? I asked
"She is already doing better, she seems much more chipper than she has been recently" he said. I could see he was happy
"That's great! I'm so glad to hear that I helped!" I was so excited and just overly happy that my first real diagnosis went well and that she was feeling better
I talked with Niall for a little before he had to go back and get ready to serve lunch to the royal families. The whole day was pretty calm and relaxing. I even fell asleep at one point. And as much as I wanted to deny it. I had a dream where I was hanging out with prince Louis and that we were friends but confessed to each other that we had feelings, then of course I had to wake up. When I woke up it was already 4:30 pm and today all the servants that were in my quarter decided to all have dinner together in the living room area of our quarter. I got back to my room and redid my hair. When I went back to the main area I saw that the more high ranked servants like Niall had actually brought us food, I didn't really want anything but I knew I hadn't eaten in a while and that they were giving it to us for free so I got some and ate it. It was really good and I was so glad that they brought us food.
