I snap my head up suddenly to a noise, grabbing the attention of the people walking around me. How long had I slept? I check my watch. It's 8:07 in the morning. I quickly grab my backpack and stand up before I hear the sound that makes my heart skip a beat.

"BROOKE!"

I turn and see him running towards me full speed, a knife in hand. I gasp and begin taking off, tears pricking at my eyes. People stare at me and at the man running after me before putting the pieces together. I turn around to see where he is, and he's even closer to me. I begin running faster and turn back, only to trip over a rock and tumble to the ground. This is a major setback. I feel my knee collapse underneath me, knowing I sprained it. Everyone hurries to slow down Dad while I get up and begin half-running, half-limping away.

An hour and a half later, I reach a building: Ms. William's Adoption Center. I smile and open the doors, stepping inside the building. Immediately, a young woman in her late-twenties or early-thirties comes quickly walking towards me.

"Hello!" she tells me. "Are you coming in to stay here? Have a chance to be adopted?" I nod. "What's your story?" I must look confused because she explains it to me. "Basically, what happened to cause you to be here?"

"Oh! Um, well, my dad murdered my mom when I was younger. He stabbed her. He was drunk and still is, and abuses me a lot. And so I got the courage to run away last night. I slept in the park overnight and I guess he found out I was missing so he went after me with a knife. He found me, and so I started running, tripped over a rock, and sprained my knee. A lot of people tried to hold him back, letting me get away to find an adoption center where I'll be safe. I found your place and decided to go in. And now I'm here. And, yeah. That's my story."

"I'm sorry to hear that!" the lady tells me. "Well, welcome to the adoption center. I'm Ms. Williams. But you probably figured it out already due to the sign outside."

"Yeah," I lie. "Thank you for letting me stay here. I appreciate it."

And this time, it's not a lie.
