KAEL WATCHED the redhead practice assembling a gun. There was a crease that formed between Natasja's brows as she concentrated. Her teeth were biting down on her bottom lip, but her slender fingers were steady and firm when holding the gun. When the final piece clicked into place, Natasja dropped the gun on the table and raised both hands to show she was done. She then groaned, craning her neck to get rid of the pain in it. The action exposed her throat and collarbones to Kael, her white tank top leaving little to the imagination.
Kael loved the growth Natasja had shown over the months. She remembered the timid, shy, quiet roommate she had before. The rich, pampered redhead could barely hold a gun back then. She always gave in to other people's opinions and rarely voiced out her own. But somehow when it came to Kael, she showed more signs of confidence and rebellion, and Kael secretly loved watching her come out of her shell.
Kael took advantage of her newfound sight, and marveled at the beauty standing before her now taking a sip of water. She never imagined she'd be able to see again. She had forced herself to adapt to the darkness, having no time to grieve for her loss of vision. The disability only pushed her to work harder, knowing she was at a disadvantage. She trained for hours everyday, resting only when her body was drained. She enjoyed the feeling of her muscles straining, enjoyed the pain of whatever she put herself through. Pain felt like the one thing she could see. And now, there was something else.
"Alright, what's next?" Natasja was standing impatiently, her hand resting on her hip bone.
"Sparring."
Green eyes widened before being followed by a groan. "Didn't we just spar a while ago? All you do is spar."
"Your hand-to-hand combat is terrible."
"I could always just use a gun." Natasja scoffed.
Kael chuckled. Natasja was becoming more and more sassy and commanding as the days went by. She then realized it had been a while and they actually only had five months left before the princess' birthday.
Suddenly, Kael saw a flash of a red dot on Natasja's forehead. She yelled, "Get down!"
In two seconds, the redhead found herself on the ground, with Kael's hard body pressed against her.
"You didn't say we'd start!"
"Quiet," Kael's mouth was right beside her ear. "We're being sniped."
Just then the tree trunk right beside them exploded and Natasja screamed as wood parts flew at her face. "Shit!"
She didn't hear the first one.
That's impossible, Natasja thought as her heart pounded in her head at the silence. No one can get here except through helicopter. This island is off the map.
"Keep down, Armand," Kael commanded. "Give me the gun."
Natasja tried to remember her training and evened her breathing, clearing her mind. There was a sniper out there somewhere and they could have bullets in their skulls if they weren't careful. She didn't wanna burden Kael. She needed to carry her own weight.
"He's at the house," Kael muttered after looking at angle the bullet pierced in the tree trunk. "Not a professional. If he was, we'd be dead by now."
