Angel sent you off to work with a sweet kiss and a playful smack on the ass. You couldn't stop smiling as you drove to the hospital. You'd wanted Angel for so long. Being closer to him was one of the reasons you'd applied for your new job. Yes, you wanted to be back home in Santo Padre, and closer to Coco. But, you wanted to be with him.
When you got to work, you headed straight to the HR department to check in for orientation. This wasn't your first time working in a hospital. When you aren't an in-home nurse, you usually travel around as a trauma nurse in the ER. You actually love the hospital setting, and had only taken the in-home job because the patient was family.
After the obligatory videos and paperwork, you got your badge and headed down to the ER. You were excited to meet your new coworkers. You got on with just about everyone, so you weren't worried. In all, you were working with 3 other females and 2 males. Two of the girls were close to your age, and the other was quite a bit older. She seemed to have a sassy mouth. Oh yeah, you were going to love her. One of the males was about your age, and the other was a few years older. They both seemed nice, so hopefully that will mean drama-free work. Well, no drama with coworkers. It's the ER. There is always drama somewhere.
You were put on rounds with the guy about your age, Tom, so he could help familiarize you with where everything was stored and how to use their computer system. As you worked, you chatted. Turns out he's a year older than you, grew up in Calexico and has been at the hospital for a couple years. You were usually pretty quiet about most aspects of your life when it comes to work. So, you gave him the basics. Grew up in Santo Padre, bounced around California as a travel nurse, back home for good. He didn't ask about your relationship status, and you didn't ask about his.
The ER was pretty steady for most of the morning. Around 1pm, an ambulance came in with a patient that had been involved in a car versus motorcycle accident. Your heart damn near stopped when you heard motorcycle. As they wheeled the patient in, you saw that it was EZ. He was looking kinda banged up, but not bad. You were guessing he agreed to come in for insurance purposes.
You smiled at him, but let Tom take the lead, as was protocol. He asked all the basics, then asked if he should call anyone. EZ leaned around the guy to look at you.
"Hey, Shorty."
"Hey, EZ. You look like you got hit by a car."
"HaHa. Very funny."
You chuckled, and went about bandaging his cuts, while Tom looked at you in surprise. You weren't sure if it was because you knew a Mayan, but it wouldn't be the first time.
"Sir, is there someone we can call? You'll need a ride when you are released, as is protocol for any potential head injuries."
"Yeah. Shorty, can you call Angel for me?"
"Sure."
You pulled your phone out of your pocket and brought up Angel's contact info. It only rang once before he answered.
"Hey, corazón. How's your first day?"
"Hey, mi amor. It's been busy. Just finished bandaging up EZ. He was hit by a car on his bike. He's ok, but he will need a ride. I'm not off for a few more hours, but I can bring him if you are busy."
"Mierda. I'll come by and get him. I'll just have to bring the van. I was wondering where the hell he was. I'll be there soon. I love you, bebita." (Shit.)
"I love you too." You hung up and turned back to EZ. As you told him that Angel was on his way, Tom was staring at you.
"Come on, y/n. We need to keep moving. Sir, if you'll just stay here, we will be back to check on you soon."
"Don't get into any trouble, EZ." You said with a laugh. He chuckled and shooed you away.
As you were walking to the next room, Tom turned to you.
"So, you know Mayans?"
"Yeah."
"They aren't the best crowd to be hanging around. If you want to fit in here, you'd do well to distance yourself."
You just scoffed and looked at him in disbelief. Seriously?
"Thanks for the advice."
He nodded, obviously pleased and thinking you were going to take his advice. Not a chance.
You completed your rounds and were at the nurses station when there was some commotion by the door. You looked up to see Angel, Coco and Gilly all walking in. You noticed Tom stiffen when he saw them. This guy really was going to be a pain in the ass if he kept being so judgmental.
"Shorty, Shorty, Shorty." Coco called with a laugh.
"Coco, Coco, Coco." You called back.
They walked up to the nurses station, and Angel leaned toward you to capture your lips in a quick kiss.
"Hey, baby. Wanna come home with me tonight?" he asked with a laugh and a wink.
"No amaría nada mas, mi amor." (I'd love nothing more, my love.)
Tom just kept watching you, but you were too busy to notice.
"Alright, where's the Prospect?"
You pointed to the room directly across from you.
"Don't go in there and cause trouble, boys. You hear me?"
"Si, señora," all three answered, before walking into the room. Less than a minute later, you could hear the guys messing around.
"¡Ángel Ignacio Reyes! ¿Qué te dije?" You called out with a laugh, while walking into the room. (What did I tell you?)
They all calmed down when they saw you and Tom. Angel was looking at him, evaluating. Tom was giving EZ his discharge information, while you were double checking his bandages. He was totally fine, but you had to do your job.
"Alright, sir, you're all set." Tom said before spinning on his heel and walking out.
"Don't do anything stupid with him, got it, boys?"
They all nodded and smiled innocently.
You stepped over to Angel. "Mi amor, I have to get back to work. Please just let him take it easy for a few hours. I'll come to the clubhouse when I get out and make sure he's good."
Angel nodded, before wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you close. He leaned in and kissed you sweetly.
"Te quiero, bebita. Siempre." (I love you, baby girl. Always.)
"Te quiero, mi amor. Siempre."
He kissed you one more time and let you go.
"I'll see you in a few hours, corazón."
"Yes, you will. Now go be good and take care of your brother."
Once the guys were gone, you started stripping the bed and gathering up everything that needed to be changed out. Tom stepped back into the room while you were working.
"You seem very chummy with that biker."
"Yup."
"You'll fit in a lot better here if you associate with people who are more respectable. I understand that you are new here, and the bad boy vibe can be appealing. It's not going to be very good for your social life if people find out you are spending time with a biker gang."
"Look, I appreciate your concern, but I'm good. Thanks."
"You'll find out soon enough what kind of men they are. You can't possibly know them well if you are still willingly spending time with them."
"I don't think my personal life is any of your concern. Thank you." You turned and walked out of the room and back to the nurses' station. Great, first day on the job and your coworker is a dick.
