Tam Song and Keefe Sencen were 20 years old, and they'd been roommates for a few months. Both boys had good days and bad ones, Tam especially had bad days when he was forced into social situations. His social anxiety made it hard for him to interact with large crowds without having anxiety attacks. Keefe had grown used to hearing Tam cry through the thin walls, but he was tired of the helpless feeling he always got when Tam would come home, run to his room immediately, and slam the door shut.
Tam had just had a god awful day at school, and as usual, he ran straight to his room and slammed the door shut. His professor had talked to him in front of the entire class, which was more crowded than usual, and he got the busiest shift at work. He was tired, and miserable, and he just wanted to curl up into a ball in his bed and sleep the day away.
"Crap," Tam hissed, feeling tears start to drip down his face as he tugged his jagged bangs to calm himself, "crap, crap, crap!". "Tammy?", Keefe knocked softly on Tam's door. Tam sighed and swore under his breath, he must've woken Keefe. Between the thin walls and Tam's angry voice, it wasn't hard to hear things.
"C'mon Bangs Boy, let me in," Keefe said in a sing-song voice. Tam smiled a bit at the nickname and found the strength to get out of his small corner he'd hidden himself in. He knew he was a mess, tear-stained cheeks and swollen, red eyes but he still opened the door quietly. There was a good height distance between the two, so Tam rallied all the bravery he could and looked up at a smirking Keefe. "Bad day?", Keefe smiled sadly. "The worst," Tam agreed, unsure of why he was opening up to the guy in front of him. Tam stepped behind the door to let Keefe in and sat on his bed, curious as to what Keefe could possibly want.
"Can I....", Keefe hesitated a bit, "can I sing to you?". "Sing?", Tam asked in a surprised tone, "you want to sing to me?". Keefe nodded and blushed a little, turning his head away to avoid eye contact. "Alright," Tam sighed, eyeing Keefe warily. "C'mon, get under the covers," Keefe urged. Tam heaved another big sigh and got under his black blankets, leaving the matching sheets underneath him. "What song?", Keefe asked, more than a little scared to do what he was offering in case Tam hated it, or maybe if it didn't work, or- "Blackbird," Tam whispered, "by The Beatles." Keefe smiled a true, rare Keefe smile and opened his mouth to sing:
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to ariseAs Keefe sang, Tam could feel the tension leaving his body, relaxing into the soft melody of Keefe's harmonic voice.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to ariseBefore Tam could stop himself and listen more to the beautiful song, he felt himself begin to drift off.
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black nightBlackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night"Sweet dreams Tam, you deserve them...", Keefe brushed his bangs out of his face, kissed Tam on the forehead, and let his hand linger on Tam's face for a few moments. "God, you drive me crazy and you don't even know it," Keefe smiled. He got up and went to the couch, plopping down with a sigh. He turned on the TV and his lips tugged into a massive grin.
That night, they both slept better than either of them had in months.
