Three questions were racing through Roman's mind; What, why and when? Humans were never on the beach! He knew because he basically lived there. He should've heard them anyways. Well, he might've of been too distracted to actually pay attention. He really wanted to catch a seagull to show off to Remus and prove to his brother and best friend that he could hunt too. And well, turns out, catching food on land isn't the easiest thing, especially when they have wings and can fly off. But he'd seen Virgil do it before so there was no way he couldn't. Unfortunately, turns out seagulls can spot him a lot easier than they do Virgil.
Roman made a quick decision and swam out of the pool and back into the ocean at a fast pace. He needed to go find Virgil and Remus before they got hurt or someone else did. He swam along the line of the beach, a bit away as he didn't want to be spotted in the shallows. He sighed when he couldn't see any trace of his friends nearby. He swam deeper and farther into the ocean, breezing past and dodging kelp. Suddenly he felt a pressure around his side, knocking him aside. "Romo! There you are!" Remus exclaimed, hugging his brother. "What's up with you?" Roman chuckled, surprised to see his brother suddenly clinging to him. "We heard your screech from all the way down at the bottom, Virgil went out to look for you." Remus explained, expecting Roman to just simply shrug it off and the two of them to go find Virgil. But that was not the reaction he got.
The twins raced back in the direction Roman had came from, eyes peeled for a white spotted tail. You'd think it would be easy to find a mer three times bigger than them who could knock down a fishing boat if he wanted to. Even if Virgil's tail blended in with the sand a lot better than the twins did, they would still recognize them in an instinct.
Roman sighed out of relief when he saw the familiar rounded fins and long patterned tail in the water. Well it was in the water for a little. Roman silently cursed as Virgil pounced and jumped out of the water, near the shallows may he add. The large mer soon landed back in the water, a feathery white corpse in his jaws. Roman was a bit jealous at how easily Virgil had caught the bird he had been going after since sunrise but soon remembered the task at hand. He didn't remember on his own though, he was reminded by a shrill scream and gasps from up above on shore. "Snack time~" Remus sang, his fins folding and unfolding in excitement. Before Roman could stop either of them, both of his best friends had jumped out of the water. And this time, they didn't come down right after.
The more reserved twin shot out of the water to follow them, landing on the sand between the two other mer's. The three water-dwellers were surprised to see not one, not three, but five humans. Remus smirked, his fangs glistening brighter than Roman's collection of gems and jewels. Right as the one twin was about to lunge, the other quickly tackled them with a lot more force than before in the water. Remus growled and the two were soon tussling on the sand, playfully of course. Virgil quickly separated the two, using his tail to pry the two away from each other as well as a stern glare. The twins sighed as they rolled their eyes. Of course, the largest had to go into 'mom mode' when they were just having fun.
The mer with the dullest but only patterned tail turned back to the flock of humans, eyeing them curiously. Roman and Remus did the same, Roman locking eyes with one of the humans from before. How could he have failed to realize how the sun shone off them before? Their brown eyes were brighter than the sun on any summer day and shinier than any jewel in his collection. Roman quickly looked away, aware of the heat rising up his neck and to his cheeks. His fins folded in embarrassment as he casted a glance towards his twin, who was smirking and cooing teasingly at him. "I'll bite you, you sea rat!" Roman snarled, to which his twin just chuckled and gave him a challenging stare. "Try me bitc-" Before Remus could finish his sentence the two were tumbling into the water, now wrestling in the shallows.
Virgil sighed, out of every single creature in the ocean he was stuck with these two swimming pests who never seemed to run out of energy. He was about to go separate the two again when a rock was thrown at his head. He turned to the threat with a hiss, that threat being Remus who was baring a smirk. Virgil let out a screech louder and more scarier than Roman's from when he was chasing seagulls, sending the two shrieking and jumping farther into the water. Virgil huffed and rubbed his head where the rock was thrown, hissing when he saw red liquid smudge on his hand. He knew Remus didn't mean to hurt him but it was still annoying.
"Um, d-do you need help? That looks a bit painful."
