Amy’s POV.

I thought I’d see that Martin was alright since I’d left him in charge of the music whilst we’d been playing spin the bottle. I checked the time; it was already half past midnight but no one seemed tired. I knew Codie and Louis were in the kitchen so I tried not to look as I walked past, but I couldn’t help peeking at the two of them kissing. I’d known Louis all my life and it was clear from the way he always talked about her how much he liked her.

Outside, Martin looked like he was doing a good job as everyone was still dancing. He waved to me, pulling his headphones down for a moment. I smiled at him and made it over to where he was standing. He wrapped his arms around my waist and gave me a quick kiss.

‘Hope you didn’t snog too many guys.’ he said, his long hair tickling my ear.

‘No one like you baby.’ I reassured him. Martin was one of the most understanding guys I’d ever met and I was lucky to have him. I would never be able to thank Liam enough for introducing me to his best friend. ’Are you alright here?’

‘Yeah, I’m enjoying myself actually.’ he replied and I put my head on his shoulder to survey the crowd in the garden. I noticed Liam, Niall, Georgina and Becka standing near the pool and thought I’d join them.

‘Come on, Liam’s over there.’ I pulled Martin’s hand. ‘Just put the playlist on shuffle and it’ll be fine.’

He considered it for a second, then did as I’d instructed. We walked over to the others holding hands. Niall looked positively drunk and to my surprise, so did Liam. I decided not to bring it up.

‘Alisha and Zayn had to go home.’ Georgina announced, reading a text message.

‘I’m sure they did.’ Martin commented and the boys laughed. Liam whispered something to Becka and she gave him an ‘are-you-serious?’ look.

‘Not playing anymore?’ I teased Gina.

‘It’s too stuffy inside.’ she complained, fixing her dress.

‘It’s even hot out here.’ Becka added.

Something about the way Liam was smirking told me that she probably shouldn’t have said that. He winked at me as he put his arms around Becka innocently. I tried not to laugh, knowing exactly what he was planning to do.

‘I’m sure this will cool you down.’ he chuckled before jumping straight in the pool; Becka squealing in his arms. They both hit the water with a splash and disappeared for a moment. Their heads soon came up and I saw Becka was clinging onto Liam for dear life.

‘I can’t swim, you bloody idiot!’ she panted in exasperation, but she was smiling. A few people near us had realised what had happened and decided to join in. Niall had already pulled Georgina in and I moved back, so as not to get splashed. I turned to look at Martin who was standing there with a smug smile on his face.

‘Don’t you dare..’ I started, but I was too late. He knew I could swim well, so he pushed me in without worrying that I’d go under. The water was even colder than I expected and I struggled to come up for air. Martin had dived in straight after and I wrapped my arms around his neck, shivering.

‘Thanks very much.’ I said sarcastically. I hoped my dress wouldn’t be ruined and wiped my eyes, suspecting that mascara was already running down my face. Martin just laughed, putting a strand of my soaking, dark brown hair behind my ear. I was about to lean in for a kiss when suddenly the garden was plunged into utter darkness and silence. The water looked black in the dim moonlight as I realised what must have happened.

‘Oh shit, the cables..’ Martin echoed my thoughts.
