Tasha’s POV.
The house was dead quiet as I knocked on Niall’s door the next morning and I figured that whoever had stayed the night was still sleeping. After a long wait on the porch steps, Louis finally opened the door. He looked exhausted, but as cheerful as ever.
‘Come to check up on Hazza?’ he teased, giving me a quick hug. He looked sober, but the smell of whisky lingered on him. I decided not to mention it.
‘Yep, I’m giving him a lift back.’ I answered, stepping inside and shutting the door behind me. ‘I hope you’ve been keeping an eye on him.’
‘I actually have no idea where he is.’ Louis admitted, brushing his hand through his hair. ‘We.. I mean I, fell asleep upstairs and only just came down.’
I watched him suspiciously as we walked down the corridor, knowing exactly what that grin on his face meant. The place seemed quite orderly which was good news for when Niall’s parents got back. There was no one in the kitchen so we peeked into the living room. The curtains were still drawn; the light too dim to see properly. I flipped the switch to find two people sleeping peacefully on the sofa. Francesca looked like an angel in the arms of my brother, a blanket draped over them roughly.
Harry opened his eyes at once and an expression of shock-horror crossed his face when he saw me standing in the doorway. Francesca sighed quietly then attempted to sit up. She almost rolled off the sofa as her eyes met mine. I was relieved to find that they both had their clothes on.
‘Tasha.’ Harry cleared his throat, also sitting up. I could see that Louis wanted to laugh, but I gave him a warning look.
‘Slept well Harry?’ I asked, my voice steady. He flushed red and was thinking of a decent reply when we heard footsteps in the room next to us. Second later, Liam came out, a doleful expression on his face. He looked a mess and just about managed to croak ‘Hello’.
‘You don’t look so good, mate.’ Louis seemed amused as he put an arm around his shoulders.
‘I’m glad you find this funny.’ Liam mumbled, staring up at him.
‘Becka said she’d meet you at four by the way.’ Louis added just as he had turned to walk into the kitchen. Liam paused, but was obviously too hungover at the moment to consider anything. He walked over to the medicine cupboard, clutching his head.
‘We should get going.’ Harry spoke up and I turned back to face him. He was now standing while Francesca didn’t appear to have moved; she looked mortified by my presence or perhaps by whatever had happened last night.
‘Just a minute. Let’s have a quick chat first, Harry.’ I said, my expression giving away nothing. Louis was quick to catch on and said he’d go to find Niall. Harry followed me out into the corridor miserably.
‘Look, honestly nothing happened last night.’ he explained hurriedly, looking sincere. I laughed lightly and he stared at me in surprise.
‘You’re nearly seventeen, you don’t have to explain what you do to me.’ I assured him, smiling. ‘I just wondered if you might want Francesca to come for dinner tonight.’
He looked disbelieving for a moment, but was soon grinning when he realised I was being serious. ‘Have I told you that you’re an amazing sister?’
‘Not enough.’ I said, giving him a hug. We returned to the room and I offered to give Francesca a lift home. She smiled questioningly at Harry who smiled back and took her hand in his.
‘That would be great.’ she replied and we all made our way outside, the awkwardness dispersing slightly. Louis appeared with a tired-looking Niall and the three boys stopped for a chat as Francesca and I got in the car. She still looked rather frightened of what I might say to her.
‘Chess?’ I asked once she had shut the door.
‘Mm?’ She fiddled with her long hair nervously.
‘I’m glad you’ve finally hit it off with my brother.’ I said truthfully. It was obvious to everyone else, even me that there had always been something between them. They had known each other for ages and from what I could tell, Francesca was a sensible, sweet girl.
‘Really?’ She looked genuinely surprised and relieved at once.
‘Of course. I have never seen anyone make him so happy.’ I squeezed her hand gently and she giggled. It was the first step to a friendship that would last forever.
