GRAVITY IS NOT LYRA'S FRIEND, as it turns out. In fact, she trips and faceplants almost as soon as she lands.

"Ow," she says out loud, her words muffled by the dirt. It tastes exactly like how it looks.

"Guess Pike forgot to tell us how different gravity is here in class," a distinctly male voice comments.

Standing, Lyra brushes the loose soil off of her lavender jacket as she surveys the two boys that have approached her. An Asian boy with tan skin and his hands half-shoved into his pockets. Beside him is Jasper, whom she hasn't seen since. . . y'know. . . that class.

(Which, by the way, she still doesn't get the point of beating up John Murphy.)

But, anyways.

Great, awkward conversation. Here social-bitterly Lyra Jupiter (Franko) comes!

"I feel like I've gained, like, a million pounds," says Jasper. "Pike really should've gone over that instead of losing it and assaulting Murphy."

"Woah, what?" The Asian boy glances at him. "Pike beat someone up in your class?"

Jasper looks at him weirdly. "Um, yeah. Im pretty sure he, like, said we needed to know we had no friends down here or something. And that it was how we graduated. Did that not happen in your class... ?"

"Dude, no!"

Jasper turns to her expectantly but Lyra just shrugs, bewildered. Then, because she isn't quite sure what else to say, she adds, "Erm... your weight didn't change since we got down here."

He blinks. "Huh?"

"How much do you weigh?"

"One-sixty," answers Jasper, sounding unsure of himself. Then, more confidently, he repeats, "Yeah, one-sixty."

His friend snorts. "Yeah, soaking wet."
