Chapter Seventeen - News
•••
Kai's hand was in yours as he led you through the Shie Hassaikai's compound. He took you down intricate and long halls to the room where he had his meeting with the league of villains. He took you to the room where you and Dabi first met. The room where Dabi had singed your tightly tied dress, freeing you and igniting a fire in your soul by doing so.
Before Kai had led you down to this room he had taken you up to your shared bedroom to scrounge around for a ring to put on your finger. It was a big rock, one little girl's dreamed of getting proposed to with, it was also old and antique. Kai had told you it was his mother's, one of the only things he had of his parents, one of the only things he had leftover from his past life before your grandfather had taken him in.
The weight of the ring on your finger felt like a load of bricks. You felt both disgust and guilt towards the ring. Disgust for even having his ring around your finger, disgust for having to fake these fallacious feelings of love, disgust for acting like such a meek little pushover, submissive to Kai. Guilty for vowing to be his wife, guilty for taking his mother's ring when you had intentions of betraying him so deeply.
Kai tugs you along with him back to the leather couch you were sitting on when you had your first original meeting with Dabi and the league. Rather than meeting with the league this time around, you were sitting across from Kai's most trusted employees, his most rusted lackeys. Dabi was there too as well, presumably due to the fact he was supposed to be your babysitter for the time being.
Kai brings your joined hands up to his lips and kisses your knuckles sweetly, it makes you sick to your stomach. You know that by now Dabi has seen the rings, you glace over at him slightly. You don't let your eyes linger for too long as to not look suspicious, if your eyes were going to linger, it was best to let them linger on your husband-to-be. Yet you can't help your eyes from trailing over to Dabi.
Your eyes fly to him like a bee to pollen. You can't help it, your infatuated by the man now, and the idea of being clung to another man in his presence curdles your stomach. When you look at his eyes he looks appeased almost, he's satisfied and your promise to him is brought back to your mind. The promise to play into Kai's game. You're positive he's seen the ring, and he must think it's all part of a ploy to make Kai think you're absolutely in love with him, to make him think you're absolutely under his power.
So much has happened since Kai got back, and there are so many things you'd like to tell Dabi. Your proposal, your pregnancy, and how it'll affect you both. You yearned for Kai to just disappear, you wanted to tell Dabi about all of this on your own. You wanted to tell Dabi about your pregnancy on your own terms, in your own way. Kai was going to announce your engagement, and undoubtedly, he was going to announce your pregnancy.
"I've gathered you all here for a reason, me and [Y/N] have decided to get married."
"Congratulations boss."
Mimic, being ever the suckup, was the first voice to speak out wishing Kai congratulations on his engagement. Soon other voices such as Hari, Rappa and Sakaki as well as many others respectfully followed suit. Kai gripped your hand tighter, but it wasn't in the same malicious manner as he would have usually done. Instead of pulling you closer to him, Kai pushed himself closer to you and left your connected hands in his lap.
To simply oblige him for being so gentle and considerate towards you, you rested your head against his shoulder. You truly didn't know if Kai was changing like he said he was going to, but ever since his talk in the infirmary, he'd been gentle and nice; he didn't tug you around or yank you. He went your pace and speed rather than making you come up to meet his expectations, he was patient.
"Marriage? Imagine having a few little ones running around, that'll be a nightmare."
The comment flys through Dabi's mouth and he doesn't even know how ironic his words are, but he soon will. The comment might come off as rude, but it didn't bother Kai because he didn't like the League in the first place, the only reason Dabi was there while Kai announced your news was due to the fact he had been babysitting you.
You're sure this is the closest thing to congratulations that Dabi can deliver, and no one pays mind to him due to his affiliations with the League of Villains. They think they're better than him because despite both being criminals, they don't have to get their hands as dirty. Despite them not paying mind to Dabi, you can see the real meaning behind his words.
It's a crude comment towards Kai. It's a jab at him, not at the idea of having kids. It's a dig at bringing another person like Kai into this world. His comment brings you a reason to smile, this one has a purpose, it has meaning, unlike the fake, empty ones you'd been putting on in a charade for Kai.
You know what Kai's next words are going to be, and they send nerves down to the pit of your stomach. Dabi's words left him with the perfect opening, he's going to mention your pregnancy. You didn't know how Dabi was going to react to the news. He wouldn't have a clue whether it was Kai's or his, and you didn't know whether that mattered to him. Would he reject this child? his possible baby?
"That brings us to the second reason I have summoned you all here, soon I won't have to imagine. My precious bride-to-be is with child."
Another chorus of congratulation are sent out, and you can only imagine how many of them must think this marriage was brought on due to the fact that you're pregnant. Dabi doesn't say anything or give out any contributary words over your pregnancy, everyone chalks this up as embarrassment over his earlier comment about Kai and you having children.
That wasn't the case at all. As you looked at Dabi, even for the split second it was, you could see all the emotions swirling around in his eyes. His hands are clenched and it's like a blade is stuck in your chest. Was he upset over this? Was he upset over the possibility of fathering your baby? Or perhaps was he simply upset over that fact that Kai was going to parade you around like it was his, and maybe so, perhaps he was upset that there was a possibility it might be Kai's and not his.
"Considering the fact we're under heavy observations from the heroes, I want [Y/N] under heavier protection. I currently have Dabi with her when I'm not around, but I want you, Chronostasis, with them too."
You tried to let the disappointment show on your face. You wanted to talk to Dabi after this little meeting, you wanted to talk to him about this baby, and how to would affect you both. You wanted to know whether he still wanted to help you, or if he planned to abandon you, Eri, and this unborn child. You wouldn't be able to now, and you suspected you wouldn't be alone to talk about it for a while.
"I will lay down my life for [Y/N] and your child."
While Hari knew you before Kai, he was now loyal to him to a fault. If you and Dabi even looked at each other just a second too long, it would raise major suspicions.
