Chapter Nine – Snitches

•••

You walked out the door with Dabi. Every step you took carried you further and further away from Eri's door, every step weighed heavy on your heart but you still felt determined to fulfill your promise to Eri.

The walk back to your room was quiet, all that could be heard was the sound of Dabi's heavy boots every time he took a new step. You both kept to yourselves, you suspected that Dabi felt bad for having to pull you away from your sister.

You reached your bedroom, or rather your and Kai's shared bedroom, the room you thought of as a prison. Dabi stopped walking and waited for you to go in. Your hand was resting on the doorknob when a still quiet Dabi started to walk away but you were quick to grab onto his sleeve.

"Dabi... Thank you."

You were shyly looking at the ground at your feet with a sweet smile adjourned on your face. Your hand still clung to his jacket sleeve making you feel like a shy little kid asking for something, but you weren't a shy little kid. You were just Kai's girlfriend and this was Dabi, Dabi who was kind to you.

It felt so wrong to grab him like this, but it also felt so right.

"Really, it meant a lot to me."

You couldn't see it due to the scars on his skin, but Dabi was blushing. He wasn't used to being thanked. He wasn't used to the kind smiles and gratitude. Whenever someone saw him, they saw the scars and ran. They judged him off of appearance, but you didn't. You made him want to get your gratitude and appreciation, he yearned for it.

If Dabi didn't know any better, he would say he was developing feelings for the head yakuza's girlfriend. It was a bad thought to entertain, it would mess up with the plans that Shigaraki set up, it would mess up the business deal, yet Dabi couldn't stop himself from letting a half-smile present itself on his face.

"It's no big deal, dollface."

You looked up from your feet to his face which was now looking at you. You tried not to let it show but you felt flustered, and the pet name made you realize giddy. How could you not be giddy and happy? He was a kind, nice man and he was giving you attention. Nice attention, unlike the kind of attention Kai gave you, where he was angry and upset. It was unlike the attention your boyfriend gave you, where he felt you deserved to be punished.

You took a step closer to Dabi and the bedroom door swung open. You quickly let go of his jacket and let your arms swing limp at your sides as a seething Kai emerged from the bedroom.

"I thought I gave you explicit instructions not to let [Y/N] see Eri."

"He didn't!"

You quickly looked at the ground, scared that you set Kai off even more by defending the young villain. You couldn't just stand by and let him yell at Dabi, you couldn't. You had to defend him, if Kai knew the truth then it wouldn't smooth over well for Dabi. You took a deep breath before looking Kai in the eyes, an act of defiance.

"He didn't let me, I ran off. I took advantage of him not being familiar with the property and ran."

Kai looked at you with that malice and anger that you had grown to know. That anger he kept well preserved and hidden from onlookers and peering eyes.

"I see."

Going into businessman mode, Kai tried to fix any bad impression he left on Dabi so the man wouldn't report it back to his leader and screw up the business deal. He wrapped his arm around you and pulled you closer to his side as he feigned fake worry.

"Don't lose her again."

He squeezed you tighter, just showing you how angry he was.

"I just got so worried about you when I couldn't find you, and you know how dangerous Eri's quirk is."

In that instance to wished to be anywhere except under the watchful gaze of both the men. On one hand, you had to fake being a grateful, happy girlfriend or risk having an overly hateful punishment, on the other hand, you didn't want to be seen so close to Kai when Dabi was around – you knew you should think that way, but all you could think about was the way dollface just rolled off of Dabi's tongue.

"I'm sorry. To both you, and Dabi."

You meant what you said, you were sorry. Sorry for developing feelings when you were in a relationship, sorry for dragging Dabi into trouble by seeing Eri.

"I'm heading off, see you later [Y/N]."

Dabi gave you one last look at your face as if begging you to cry out for him to stay, as if begging for you to tell him to get you away from Kai, but it never comes. Dabi tears his eyes away from yours and he turned around to saunter off away from you both.

Once he was out of sight Kai tugged you roughly into the bedroom by your arm and pushed you into the bed. You knew you were in for a big punishment tonight but you could handle it. You could handle Kai being angry at you, you could handle his punishments, but you couldn't handle Dabi getting hurt over something he did for you.

As Kai roughly grabbed you, thoughts off Dabi's deep voice ran through your head. As Kai inflicted your pain, you thought about the way Dabi's pet name rolled right off his tongue. As Kai made you bleed, you thought about the way Dabi's hand felt against yours when he grabbed you earlier.

For the first time in a long time, you felt you justly deserved Kai's punishment.
