"NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT, DEREK!" Cassandra yelled. She was tired of fighting. She was tired of explaining. She loved her husband very much but he did not understand. He wasn't there, when it all fell apart, and he wasn't there when it started building back slowly, piece by piece. This was all she had.
"Cassie, please understand" Derek pleaded with his wife. Derek was done. Cassie's friends needed to be put in check. They couldn't keep doing this. He never liked their way of doing things, he knew he could do much better. He had a plan. But his wife did not support it.
"They are my friends Derek!" Cassandra shrieked, tears streaming down her face, "You can't do this. Please!"
Derek sighed and walked forward, grabbing Cassandra by the waist forcefully, he pulled her flush against him. She flinched at the sudden movement, her side starting to bruise.
He leaned forward towards her left ear and whispered, "I'm done pretending to be below those people you call friends. I'm doing this alone, without you"
Cassandra wailed and cried as Derek pushed her away and slapped her, sending her towards the wall and effectively hitting her head. Little did they know their 2-year-old daughter was seeing everything from the crack in the door.
"Maybe, when you come back to your senses and see the light, you'll come back to me, I know you will. I will take you back, without any hassle" Derek said one last time and turned around towards the front door.
After Derek left, her phone rang. Cassandra sniffled and crawled towards the coffee table to reach for her phone.
"Kyla..." Cassandra cried into the phone, her eyes red and puffy.
2-year-old Kyra walked out cautiously towards her mother who was crying into the phone.
"Please come soon" she cried and put the phone down. She noticed her daughter coming towards her and wiped her face free of tears.
"Baby, why are you out of bed?" she tried for a smile, but she couldn't.
Kyra looked at her mother, she did not know what was wrong. Why did her mother cry? What was going on?
Cassandra sighed, tired. She picked up her daughter and walked towards her room.
Laying her down on the bed, she climbed in too.
"Daddy will come around baby" she whispered, her voice cracking, "He loves you; he loves us. He's just- "she sniffled and forced her tears back.
After a while, they both were asleep, contented in each other's warmth.
In a few hours, there was a knock on the door. Cassandra woke up, cautiously walking towards the door she hesitantly opened it. Afraid that it would be Derek.
Opening the door, she sees Kyla, Hardin and Alaric.
"Oh Honey!" Kyla sympathised and walked forwards, hugging her friend. Cassandra broke down again.
"I can't do this anymore" she whispered.
Hardin put a hand on Cassie's shoulder and smiled reassuringly, "We'll get you out of here"
Alaric gave her a small nod," Don't worry, it will be fine soon"
Cassie ushered them all into the kitchen and soon Tamara, Richard, Lilly and Eugene also showed up.
"So..." Cassandra trailed.
"Start from the beginning" Richard coaxed.
Cassandra looked at the door where her daughter was, fast asleep, and touched her stomach, her second baby on the way, and then she thought about her husband.
She looked at everyone, took a deep breath and started, "It all started..."
"IT ALL STARTED when my mother had called all our uncles, aunts and your parents' home after my father had left her alone at the house because of an argument." Kyra explained, "Jason was just conceived at that time. In the 1990s, Tamara and Richard were the heads of AYRA so they decided they'd put a stop to Derek's plans and Cassandra would stay with Kyla and Hardin."
"So that was when you and your mother shifted in with us" I confirmed.
Kyra nodded, "You weren't born yet. Later in a few months time, they put Derek down for good and Tamara and Richard moved on, taking the legacy of the CIA and your parents became the heads of AYRA."
"But where is Cassandra now?" I asked, curious.
"Dead" Kyra reminded me, "She gave birth to Jason and passed away. It was the same time around when you were born. I was kept inside the academy, hidden, and Jason was given up for adoption."
This was a lot of information for one day. I was still confused about some things. But I knew everything had a time, and a place.
I got up from my seat and nodded at Kyra, "I'll think about it and contact you, but I need to leave now."
Kyra gave me a curt nod, "Of course"
I looked at her one last time and walked out of Martha's.
Plugging in my phone to charge I started my car.
19 missed calls, 40 messages
Not thinking much about it, I sighed and made my way home.
