Wei WuXian once killed Lan WangJi's shadow. Therefore, Wei WuXian once killed his soulmate, no matter what twisted version of him, and Wei WuXian's heart withered away like the trees of the Mounds.
"You're dying," the ghoul dressed as Lan Zhan had said. His eyes of borrowed gold—fool's gold—shone in the back of the cave, always watching, waiting.
"Your candor is refreshing," Wei WuXian mumbled back.
It was true. Wei WuXian was a halfway corpse in a halfway grave, but death was fairly unremarkable the second time around. Death was festering joints and a head full of cotton clouds. Death was laying in place because his body had forgotten how to move. Death was his stomach preparing to feast on his own body. He was starving, and who would've thought Wei WuXian's reaper would appear in such an uninspired way.
The cool, wet floor offered solace for his fever, but demanded just as much in return; blisters and raging skin infections.
I'm so tired...
He was tired of being known only by shadows and pain. He was tired of being tired. And he was so fucking tried of staring at the corpse he'd hunted, felled, and dragged here days ago with a plan that flipped his stomach upside down.
Tired of being hungry.
But... but I won't eat... that.
"You can't die yet, Wei Ying." The creature lurked closer, moving unnaturally, a boneless sway in its tread that mocked the elegance of a Lan. "We're having so much fun."
"Fuck... you."
"Wei Ying," it sung again. "Our dear friend will start to rot soon now that he's dead dead."
"Shut up."
Unable to move, Wei WuXian could only close his eyes to hide from Lan Zhan. Still, the creature's wafting presence embraced him like slick sweat. He couldn't escape.
"We won't be able to bring you back a second time."
He was just inches from his face now. Breath reeking of pestilence, it fanned across Wei WuXian's lips with every word.
