E.M. Forster famously said of Cavafy,
"a greek gentleman,in a straw hat,
standing absolutely motionless,
at a slight angle to the universe."*
This poet observes the world, people within,
describing those searching on the edges,
fellow seekers of the truth about themselves,
the acceptance of difference in
a jugemental world.
He searched and looked,
he wrote, not to be misunderstood,
he loved and was loved by others
of his incline, a gentleman of poetic words.
But more than this he wrote of his country,
the land of his birth, Egypt, that city Alexandra.
the history of its foundations,
how he walked and learnt.
How to listen to "The ancient "
whispered in his ear,
their voice he wrote.
But most of all he wrote of self.
His deep love and attraction
to his fellow male companions,
Yes Cavafy did lean at a slight angle
but so beautifully in words that ring
of truth of being loved, deeply loved.
