(Y/n)'s p.o.v.:
The four of us were sitting beside the pool while Edamame explained how he pulled off his scheme. "I spent all night looking up a believable recipe for the drug," Edamame declared. "He obviously won't be able to make Sakura Magic, but I don't care as long as I get my money," he shrugged and closed his eyes with a content smile on his face.
I stared at him with wonder in my eyes. He was brave for pulling off such a stunt, and a skilled swindler for sure, but I couldn't help but feel sceptical: he was messing with a mafia boss after all. But then again, so was I.
Laurent whistled, clearly impressed. "See, Abbie, it's just as I thought," he gestured towards Edamame, "complimenting his movie shows he has a knack for this," the blond proudly announced while Edamame sat up straight, probably getting into another passionate ramble.
As I'd guessed, he shouted out "golden raspberry awards? No way!" And there he goes again: explaining about how the Razzie-series is so great. It was pretty adorable though. "He actually liked it," Abbie concluded, an unamused look on her face. "This could be a talent too," Laurent shrugged, causing me to stifle a laugh as he turned to smirk at me. "What are you smirking at, blondie?" I half glared at him, but he just laughed at me.
He opened his mouth to respond but got interrupted by a car honking. "The safe keeper's car?" Abbie muttered out, and I decided to move next to her to stand by the railing. "It must be money for the candy," Laurent's voice popped up from behind me. "I'll decide how we split it!" Edamame chimed in from his lounge chair, causing Laurent to direct his gaze at the brunet again. "Go ahead," he smiled, clearly amused. "First, I'll get half. Then you three can divide the rest of it," Edamame smiled wide, but Abbie interrupted him. "Seems like he didn't bring the money," she pointed out, gesturing to the empty-handed man getting out of the car making his way to Cassano and Salazar.
"What?" Edamame asked, a panicked look making it's way to his face as he ran over to the railing next to us. "Oh, you're right," Laurent declared, resting his chin on his hand. "Get ready to run," he casually added, looking down at Cassano and his men with that oh so familiar lazy smirk on his face. "Shit," I thought, nervously looking over at the French bastard, who just smiled at me as an answer.
Soon enough we were sitting around a table, having a business discussion with Cassano. I was sitting next to Laurent and my nerves were silently killing me, my thoughts clouded with all the possibilities of things going wrong and all of us getting ourselves killed. Somehow I still managed to keep up a calm and professional facade. "I guess I have a knack for acting then," I thought, trying to calm myself down with a somewhat humorous comment. I was pulled out of my thoughts by Cassano's feel voice.
"Sorry, but the money isn't here," he declared. "Figured," I thought, glancing at the sweating Edamame sitting at the head of the table. "Zapata is very cautious," Cassano continued on. "It's a big transaction, so being nervous is normal. If you're unsure, ask us anything," Laurent answered, a reassuring smile on his face. Even though the smile was clearly pointed at Cassano, it calmed my nerves a bit too. After all, Laurent seemed like the type of guy to always have a plan B... Or at least I hoped so.
"Ok, I'll ask," Cassano declared, closing his eyes. "The name Makoto Edamura doesn't show up in any of our searches," he stated. It was difficult to not seem nervous after he said that with such confidence, but Laurent just laughed it off, gesturing at Edamame. "How many experts do you think are in Japan?" he smiled as Edamame just nodded. "That's right, and I'm not a fan of social media," he added. "Japanese people are discreet and don't expose their names online," Laurent explained, nudging me with his foot as a sign to speak up once in a while. I nodded and tried my best to seem professional as I spoke. "Dr. Edamura especially likes to keep his life private and stay away from distractions. After all, he is a very practical man and devoted to his work," I heard a hum of approval from Cassano's end of the table and as I looked over I saw Laurent with a proud grin on his face.
"That's what we thought, so we're conducting final checks," Cassano answered, causing everyone to look over at him in slight surprise. "Final checks?" Laurent asked, the now oh-so familiar grin having disappeared. "We'll get a report from Japan soon," Cassano declared, causing Edamame to seem even more nervous than before. "From Japan?" he asked, sweat dripping down his forehead.
"Oh.
This seems like trouble."
"We sent a team of legal advisors to your workplace, the Chemical Research Institute of Japan. It's not like I don't trust you. I just want to understand more about who you are," Cassano explained. I looked over at Edamame and he was a sweating, nervous mess. "Apparently he doesn't have the same knack for acting as the rest of us do... Poor guy," I thought, taking a short sip of the champagne.
Soon enough I heard the vibrating of Cassano's phone as Edamame let out a nervous breath. "How'd it go?" Cassano asked the caller, standing up and walking towards the corner of the room. Edamame pushed back the chair as if wanting to leave, but got interrupted as the chair hit Cassano's bodyguard, causing him to sit back down. "What? Is that true? Got it, good work," Cassano ended the call, putting the phone back in his pocket and walking over to stand next to Edamame and staring at him for a few long seconds. It seemed like forever and I was just about to jump up from the chair myself, before Edamame broke the silence with a startled noise as Cassano hugged him.
"Welcome to the Cassano family," he said, causing me to let out a small sigh of relief. Though one thing still confused me: how was this possible? I looked beside me at the French bastard for answers, shooting him a questioning glance, but all I got in return was cheeky wink.
"This man is impossible," I thought, drinking some of the champagne again, hiding my suppressed smile behind the glass.
