19-can i call you tonight

After sitting at the kitchen table for a bit, sulking and feeling sad, I realized I shouldn't let this get to me. Birthdays are kind of stupid anyway. I may be a pessimist at times but I'm not going to let this make me feel so down. I need to enjoy my birthday somehow, I mean I'm seventeen now. It's too sad when I start thinking about it too much so I need a distraction.

I take a deep breath and put my dishes in the sink and grab my car keys. I decided I'd stop at Superdrug to get bleach to touch up the underside of my hair. The last time I dyed it was around a month ago so it is due for a touch-up. 

I purchase it along with some of my favourite snacks and sweets. I drive my way back home but I take the longer scenic route. It's near the middle of November now and as I turn the corner onto my street the sun is almost fully set. I roll my window down, I don't care if it's cold, the fresh air is calming. I pull into my driveway and quickly run into my house before the wind starts getting colder. 

I empty the plastic bag onto my floor in front of my mirror. I turn on my coloured lights in my room and turn on some music. I decide that I don't just want to do this by myself. I called Ellie but then realized she was streaming with one of her other online friends so I didn't want to disturb her.

I then try messaging Toby:

Bea:

can i call you tonight? if it's still family time then i get it

Toeby:

yeah we can call we just finished the last game of monopoly!

I get a facetime call from Toby and propped my phone underneath my mirror. I showed him the boxed bleach.

"Oh god what are you doing now?" he sighs.

"Just touching up the underside of my hair" I lift up my hair to show him.

"Oh! cool what colour?"

"I'm thinking pink, what do you think?" I ask.

"Pink sounds pog" he says as he opens a bag of crisps and starts snacking.

I start sectioning my hair off and mix together the bleach mixture. Toby starts rambling.

"I was thinking how cool it would be to get my motorcycling licence, like imagine me driving down a road on a MOTORCYCLE. But I'm pretty sure I need to be seventeen so possibly soon" he explains.

 I was focused on looking at my hair in the mirror making sure I didn't mess up.

"Toby, aren't you like a terrible driver? And you want to ride a motorcycle?" I laugh. "Meanwhile I, an amazing driver can get a motorcycling licence and drive past you and flip you off".

"Alright, you are not flipping me off on a motorcycle, wait when'd you turn seventeen?" he asked.

"Well...today" my voice trails off, he's gonna make it a big deal.

"Oh ok...wait... TODAY? Bea, are you kidding? And you didn't even tell me! I feel so bad I didn't get you anything." Toby says worriedly.

"No, no, no. Toby, you're fine you don't need to get me anything" I laugh at his worriedness.

"Bea, it's your birthday! I wish we could've celebrated somehow" he explains.

"Well maybe after I'm done with my hair we can have a little party on the server?" I propose.

"Yes! Ok, I'll stay on call but I'll go on the server just to do some 'errands'" he says suspiciously.

"Yes, errands. In Minecraft" I say sarcastically.

I continue focusing on my hair while Toby is attending to the server. I glance over at him and he's looking completely concentrated at whatever he's up to. 

I smile, "What you up to Turbo" I ask.

"Nothing, nothing at all" he answers.

"Alright then" I say not believing him.

I start putting the pink dye on my bleached hair.

"Almost done now, are your server errands done soon?" I ask him.

"Maybe..." he says unfocused out of the conversation.

I start drying my hair and it's now finished, "So, what do you think?" I put up my hair to show him.

"Oh...oh it looks cute" he says startled.

"Thank you very much Toby sir" I say.

I tell him I would call him on discord when I got everything set up and I end the facetime call. I turn on my pc hop into my chair. I finished the last bit of sweets I'd bought and open up discord and joined the call with Toby.

"Okay, when you go on the server just like close your eyes and I'll find you" he says.

"Okay?" I say confused.

I load in and close my eyes.

"Do you remember where you were last time?" he asks.

"Ummm, I think I was in my house" I answer.

"Alright perfect, on my wayyy" I hear him say.

I have my eyes still closed until I hear my door open in my house in the game.

"Can I open my eyes now?" I ask.

"Honestly I didn't think you'd actually close your eyes" he laughs.

"Oh shut it" I laugh back, "So what's this surprise?" I ask.

"Follow meeee" his character runs out the door and I follow behind.

He leads me to the mushroom biome and we come across the entrance of a cleared out area. He opens the gate and I see a fully decorated area and my favourite disc 'chirp' is playing. There's a little table with a cake on it and flowers everywhere and some animals running around.

"Surprise!" his character turns to me. "Happy birthday Bea! Thought this would be the least I could do" he says.

"Toby this is so cute" I look around at the decorations. "You really didn't have to do this for me but, thank you, so much. This is so kind" I smile.

This day turned out better than I expected. We eat the cake and dance to 'chirp'. We end up spending the rest of the night chatting and watching youtube videos. I guess I did end up having a pretty good birthday.
