A whizzing sound whistles through the air before a squelch sounds and the thing lurches to a halt. I hear the sickening sounds of bones snapping as it crumples into an unnatural position on the forest floor. An arrow protrudes from where you could guess a heart to be. Its been shot from behind.
I stand up, keeping Mack behind me. She keeps her grip on my wrist as I edge forward towards the creature. It nudge it with my foot but it doesn't stir. Mackenzie sniffles quietly behind me so I turn and hide the thing from her view, holding her small body close to me.
"Sshh. It's ok Macks. We're ok."
I look around as she calms down. Whoever or whatever stopped the creature could still be here and I don't know if it's friendly yet.
"Macks, turn around and face that tree ok. You can let go of me I can see enough."
As she lets go of me the monster thing disappears. The only thing I can still see is the arrow. I lean forward and pull the arrow hard until it slides out, the tip coated in blood. The sound of a snapping branch sounds behind me and I spin around.
"Who's there?!"
"Aoife, I'm scared."
"It's ok Mack."
"Who's there?!"
"Please. Don't be frightened."
A feminine voice sounds from the shadows.
"You just shot that thing and while I appreciate you saving us, I don't know if we are your next target. So forgive me if I don't trust you much, especially if you aren't showing us who you are."
I grab Mackenzie and put her behind me again.
"Who are you?"
A woman comes out of the trees and steps into a patch of moonlight.
"I am Miss Peregrine."

This isn't a very long or detailed chapter. It's just kind of a filler chapter. Sorry for taking so long, school has been crazy. I swear my teachers want to kill us through stress. Online school is so hard and lockdown here (Scotland) is still going. It's driving me insane, I can't play any sports. All the rest is fine, I don't really care about being that social. 🤣
