Chapter One

Her feet tapped on the cold hard marble floor as she impatiently waited for her fate to be decided. The office was silent except for the pitter-patter. Her emotions were jumbled between nervous and excited. Her eyes darted from face to face. They had smiles on their faces but their eyes were still judging. Voices whispered all around she was sure they were talking about her. Or maybe she's paranoid?

"Ms. Adams?" a strong masculine voice interrupts her thoughts. Startled, she looks up. The man's kind smile settled her nerves just a bit. "They're ready for you now."

She unsteadily walked towards the door labeled Meeting Room 1, her aura radiating anxiety. Her sweaty palms gripped the doorknob as she took a deep breath.

This is it Saffy, make it count.

She opened the door and walked towards the table, a smile on her face as she greeted the interviewer. Her blue eyes met his steel grey orbs.

"Good Morning." She said with a confident smile.

"Good Morning to you as well Ms. Adams. Please take a seat." He said with a charming smile. "My name is John Anderson. I'll be interviewing you today. Just relax, be yourself and answer the questions in the best way you can."

Oh God, the same interviewer speech again. Does he think I'm going to give him crappy answers or something?

She nodded.

"So, start with a basic introduction of yourself and any qualifications you may have."

"My name is Sapphire Mary-Anne Adams. I am currently a student at University of Toronto. I'm in the process of completing my Bachelor of Business Administration. I'm Vice President of the Student Union. I have excellent verbal communication skills. I have a unique ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines. I'm flexible, self-driven, creative, and imaginative, with great presentation skills. I'm a team player, and, perhaps above all, I have the ability to influence others." As she finished a feeling of relief over-came her. The introduction was always the hard part. She watched him scramble to jot everything down.

"Well, someone's cocky." John mumbled to himself, hoping she didn't hear. She did.

"There's a difference between cocky and confident, and I'm confident I'm the right person for this job."

John stared at her, a blank expression on his face, steel grey eyes boring into her sapphire ones.

"Well then, thank you Ms. Adams." John said, collecting his papers. She stared at him in disbelief.

"That's it?" Sapphire asks alarmed.

"Yes, you're done." He said standing up.

"Was it something I said?" She asked, standing up as well.

"No, you did well." John said smiling.

"Okay, well, erm, thank you." Sapphire said. She gave a final smile and walked away from the man that would decide if this job was in her destiny or not.

"Sapphire," John interrupted her thoughts making her glance back, "you did amazing, don't stress." A brilliant smile spread across his face lighting up his grey eyes, for the first time, prompting her to smile back at him.

"Thank you John."

They shared a moment of empathy before Sapphire left. She skipped out of the room only to be stopped by the secretary. She read his nameplate, informing her his name was Lance Armstrong.

"How'd you do?" he asked knowingly.

"I actually did pretty well." She returned his smile brightly.
