Sapnap casts an anxious glance at the window, where the rain has begun to come down in heavy sheets. He steals a glance back at the clock. It's almost ten – already far later than he'd intended on staying. Sapnap knows he should get going, but the worsening conditions outdoors have led him to stall for as long as he can.
"So, I'll see you tomorrow, then?" calls Dream from the other room. Sapnap feels a twinge of guilt, sensing that he's overstayed his welcome.
"Yeah. I guess," Sapnap replies, his stomach churning with dread as a flash of lighting pierces the sky outside. He stands up from the couch, dragging his feet towards the door. Dream trails behind him, showing him out.
"Do you need a hand with the dishes?" Sapnap asks in a last-ditch attempt to stay, glancing into the kitchen on his way out.
Dream shakes his head lightly. "It's fine. I got them," he replies obliviously. "I don't want to keep you."
"I don't mind," says Sapnap, a little too quickly. He turns around to face Dream. "Let me help."
Dream only chuckles, guiding Sapnap back towards the door. "I can handle it," he dismisses. "Come on, you should get home."
"I guess you're right," replies Sapnap. Stop being such a child, he scolds himself. It's just a little rain. "Well... thanks for having me over."
"No problem. It was nice seeing you," Dream replies, leaning against a wall in the corridor with an easy smile. "Oh, and drive safe," he adds, glancing towards the window. "It's getting pretty stormy."
Tell me about it, groans Sapnap internally. "I will. Thanks," he replies, mustering up a smile. He turns to the door, taking a deep breath as he places a hand on the doorknob.
What are you so scared of? Sapnap chides himself, feeling his body seize up in anticipation. He can feel Dream's stare on the back of his neck. Shame rises to his cheeks in a bright red flush.
I can do this. Sapnap finally manages to move his fingers, pulling the door open. All at once, the entryway is flooded with the sound of howling wind. Droplets of frigid water are swept indoors by the storm, spattering across the rug in the hallway.
Sapnap takes a deep breath, mustering up his courage. Just as he's about to take his first step outside, a crack of thunder tears through the sky.
Sapnap flinches backwards, and the front door slams shut.
"I just remembered!" yelps Sapnap, turning around to face Dream. "I forgot my... phone?" he tries.
Dream looks thoughtful for a second. "I'm pretty sure I saw you put it in your pocket," he says, peering at Sapnap curiously.
"Oh... you're right," replies Sapnap. "Sorry," he says, running a hand through his hair. His fingers still are still shaking, his heart galloping in his chest. He shoves his hands in his pockets, hoping Dream won't notice.
Dream furrows his brow, finally sensing that something is off. "What's up?" he asks, his voice softening.
"Nothing – well, it's stupid," replies Sapnap, shaking his head. "I mean..." He takes another deep breath, staring down at his shoes. "Can I stay here a little longer?" he finally mumbles.
"I mean, sure. But why..." Dream begins.
Sapnap looks up at Dream pleadingly, cutting off his sentence. I'm scared of the... Sapnap begins in his head, but he can't bring himself to say it out loud.
Suddenly, realization dawns in Dream's eyes. Sapnap's face flushes red as he averts his gaze. "I'm sorry. I know it's stupid," he mutters, retreating into his sweater.
