The Moonlings: The Ancient Fortress

Chapter 14

They spent all the next day preparing and finding disguises. Crater was going to use his shadow camouflage and the rest of them were going in disguised as bushes, except Misty who was using her mist power to become a moonling-shaped fog. The plan was for Misty to go into the house and quickly grab the evil stone and pass it to Crater. Then Crater would put it in a special magic-resistant pouch. They would put the containment crystal into the hole and get out of there as fast as possible. The moonlings hiding in bushes were coming as lookouts and as a backup plan in case something went wrong. When it got dark, they put their plan into action. They crept up to Shadow's camp. They felt scared and nervous and kind of hopeful. Misty and Crater snuck inside and Crater pointed out the hiding place. Then Misty snuck up and grabbed Shadow's crystal. She felt a shiver run along her body as she held it. She knew this type of crystal drained elemental magic and replaced it with dark magic. She couldn't hold it for long. She tossed it to Crater. He put it in a small pouch on his tail. Misty put the fake containment crystal in the evil one's place. There. She thought to herself. That'll stop him. All of a sudden there was a loud squeak from outside. Misty and Crater jerked their heads up. Shadow and Titania ran into the room. "It's them!" yelled Titania, who recognized them despite their powers. Shadow saw Misty push the lid back on the hold. "The crystal! They have the crystal!" he yelled. "We need to run!" Misty yelled and signaled to their friends to get out of their disguises. Another bolt of red lightning, like the one on the ship, flashed through the sky. "We need to get out of the fortress!" yelled Crater, snatching up Maple. Misty rocketed out of the top of the fortress and hurried around to the gate. "We need to get the weapons out and turn on the force field," she said. She pulled on the weapon star that was still lodged in the gate, but the weapons wouldn't come out. "Try twisting them," called Craters. She twisted and pulled and the weapons came out with a thud. The gate slowly closed and the force field went back up. Misty turned around and saw Titania manage to get through the shield but Shadow was trapped inside. It started snowing extremely hard and Misty knew it was Titania using her enhanced weather powers. It was hard to see and the winds were picking up. Fortunately Misty knew something about the wind. She tried to make a safe bubble around them but her powers had gone out. They heard Shadow yell from inside the force field and Misty could barely make out the shape of Titania turning and jetting around the corner of the wall, back inside the fortress through the magical hole they had made to get inside it in the first place. The weather started to quiet down. Misty quickly regrouped with her siblings and they retreated into the forest.
