*Shailene's POV*
I made sure my father was asleep before I got upstairs an hour after, just to make sure he didn't run around the neighbourhood, probably with intentions of smashing every vehicle. So after a quick shower and long moments of smiling and remembering the day's events, I picked up my phone to call Andrew to ask if he got home safely, and to talk about his quick reaction to my father opening the door on us. But, he had beat me to it.
I saw a text from him already. Feeling the butterflies brushing against my stomach just thinking about how perfect he was, I opened it.
I instantly regretted it.
'I can't do this anymore. Please don't talk to me again.'
What?
Crying was the last thing on my mind.
I think shock was inching through me slowly. Maybe it was a prank. Everything was okay. We were okay. I knew he was not okay today. Did I do something wrong? Did he like someone else? Was he afraid of my dad? I doubted that last thought.
The first thing I did, I told my circle on our little Facebook groupchat.
Mel had seen it. Veronica had seen it.
I put the phone down before they could reply. Perhaps it was a dream. Perhaps he's testing me. If it was a test, it was a stupid one. I had no idea what I did. I had to be dreaming.
I conversed with myself in my mind. It was so uncalled for. That was so immature. Even if the relationship was a problem, how dare he do it over a text message.
My eyes stung slightly as they were brimmed with tears when I looked at my lit phone screen. Veronica. I answered it.
'Come outside, quick.'
'What?'
It had only been ten minutes since I informed my clique and here was my badass rebel of a friend, outside my house. I tried to dry the lazy tears that refused to fall over and shrugged my hoodie on over my nightwear. When I got down and out of the house, I was grateful that she hadn't come knocking, because my father might have woken up. I ran across the grass to meet her amused expression.
'Get in.' I obeyed quickly, suddenly feeling a wave of enthusiasm wash over me.
'Where are you...we going?' She just smiled, her teeth sparkling along with her earlobe. 'Veronica answer me.'
'I won't tell you yet. Firstly, are you okay?'
'I guess, I don't think it processed yet...it has to be a joke.'
'Don't worry, you didn't need him anyway. Remember when you said you wanted to try things that you haven't done before?' I looked at her curiously and nodded. 'Well trust me when I say, you're gonna love this.'
Just then, she pulled up in Andrew's yard.
*5 minutes later*
*Andrew's POV*
I barely heard the whispers. I swear one voice said 'bury it in the backyard'.
The lights came on. Then, it hit me...literally.
The first one, square in the chest. Before I could react, the second object on my shoulder.
I sat up immediately, holding my shoulder closer to my neck. 'What the-'
I looked up and I saw Shailene, her hair up and jacket hugging her body, with her arms folded across from my bed, leaning on the wall. Not far from her, Veronica, our group warrior (the pirate), stood at my feet, playing with my baseball bat, which had my name engraved in the fine white ash wood, in her hands. After the first hit with the stapler from my desk, and the second with her shoe, I knew what was about to go down.
