Sirius Black has never claimed to be a rational person.  In fact, he was probably the least rational person he could ever know. Therefore, he felt completely justified in his quick reaction to what he saw as a life or death situation
"You're an idiot," Remus had said in response to his first shot of realization.  Sirius had decided to ignore him and face this horrible situation alone as James, strangely, was nowhere to be found. The other Hogwarts students practically tripped over themselves to get out of his path as he rushed through the corridors in search of his intended victim.  Nobody wanted to risk the wrath of a Black, not even a renegade.  With every minute it took him to find his target of him, the burning rage grew hotter in his chest into something that would otherwise have terrified him. Eventually he found who he was looking for.
"SNAPE!" He roared, pulling out his wand and pointing it at the other seventh year.
"What do you want, Black?"  he drawled
“Get your bloody paws off my brother. Now." Sirius remotely wondered if his animagus form was taking over with the way he growled words.
"Sirius!  What's wrong with you?  Severus is my friend " Regulus snapped at his brother.
"Oh, he's a lot more than I heard. Peter said he saw you two kissing the other night."
"Oh for Merlin's sake. I'm not dating your brother, Black," Snape snorted.
"I hope not."  Sirius's head snapped around to see Regulus' friend Barty Crouch Jr. approach them.  He smiled at Regulus and gave Snape a quick kiss on the cheek. "After all," he continued, "I wouldn't want to lose my best friend to my boyfriend."  The sound Sirius made was pure confusion and he lowered his wand, the anger he had kept warm suddenly cooled.  He flashed again briefly as the older Black realized Snape was giving him a condescending look. But, before he could process all the new information that had suddenly been thrown at him, he was distracted by the sound of running footsteps and a familiar voice coming behind him.
"Reeeeeeguuuuluuusssss!"
"James! For Merlin's sake! No!" Regulus was screaming but it was too late. Sirius barely saw his best friend walking past him and kissing him before it all became too much. He was out before he even touched the floor (he found out later, after waking up in the infirmary, that Remus had always known about both relationships. It took him several weeks to get over the betrayal of his best friend dating his brother. Regulus wasn't amused.)
