Before I could answer that he pointed at something behind some trees.
‘We’re here.” He said.
As we walked through those few last trees into a small glade. Right in the middle of it there was an average sized house. The walls were made with many and many stone blocks and the door and windows were made of dark wood, with dark curtains preventing anyone from prying into. The ceiling was also made of dark wood, in cone shape. For the first time since I got into the forest, I could hear birds singing.
The house seemed to be just taken out from a fairy tale. I could easily imagine a gentle old lady coming out of the door at any moment too feed the birds and squirrels.
As we got closer to the low wooden fence that went all around the house, I saw what it looked like a small lake at the side of the house. It wasn’t frozen. When we got to the fence Alb pushed gently my arm and stood up straight. He said, in a low tone:
“Raziel.” Pause. “Raziel I know you can hear us, let us in.”
He kept looking determined at the wooden door.
“Can’t we just jump this and enter? The door doesn’t seem locked to me.” I said impatiently.
“We can’t.” He said simply. I laughed sarcastically. “No, really.” He answered, still looking at the door. “Do you really think it would be that easy to break into a wizard’s house, Tessa?” I crossed my arms over my chest. “there’s probably a protecting spell all over it.” He continue looking into something I couldn’t see.
“Raziel” Alb finally said to the wooden door again, in a higher tone. “do I need to remind you of-“
He didn’t finish his sentence because suddenly a little part of the fence opened itself forming a passage. Alb smiled to himself and walked through the passage, I followed closely. When we got to the door Alb knocked two times and patiently waited a couple minutes until we heard steps inside the house.
The person who opened the door wasn’t at all what I was expecting. He was just a kid, around 13 years old. He leaned on the door and studied us, without saying anything. He wasn’t wearing any kind of robes or hat, just a pair of old jeans and a black t-shirt.
“May I help you?” he grinned when he looked at me but he probably remembered something and looked away, with his jawline clinched to Alb. His eyes were deeply black, the kind that made it difficult to look away. Raziel and Alb were staring at each other.
I didn’t like being left out of everything, not knowing what’s going on and why nobody would give me the answers I needed.
“He’s been bitten” I said firmly “and we need you to cure it.”
Both of them stopped the eye contact and looked at me. Raziel raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything but stepped back into the house making a sign for us to follow him. I looked at Alb to see if he needed help to walk but he continued standing up straight and although I could see him struggling every step he did not seem to want help.
The inside of the house was also not what I was expecting.
The walls were all black, with the most various paintings covering them. Some of them were paintings of animals, others were people, and others were nature, all of them extremely well painted. The wall on the left was covered with bookshelves containing all sorts of books, tiny or huge, colourful or all black.
In the middle of the room there was a long table, in which I could see many bottles and weird-looking liquids. There was a circle drawn on the ground all around the table, with some strange symbols inside.
If the outside of the house seemed taken out from a fairy tale the inside looked like a horror film.
The little wizard went straight up to an armchair on the side near the bookshelves and sat down holding hands under his chin like he was considering what to do with us as soon as we looked away. As there wasn’t any more chairs in the room we just stayed where we were and looked at him.
“So can you cure him or not?” I say coldly, breaking the silence and giving Alb a worried look. He was very pale.
“Of course I can.” He answered coldly too. He turned to Alb “I didn’t know you bond with her kind.” He said with an empty expression. I could see the anger in Alb’s eyes when he heard that, but he respected the kid Raziel somehow, and didn’t say anything.
“So, Albert.” Raziel continued. “Long time no see. I suppose you still remember what your cure will cost you.” His eyes were sparkling pleasure of the whole situation.
What was he talking about?
“Yes.” Alb said weakly “I’m ready”
“Come with me, then.” Raziel got up the chair and headed to a door with stairs going down. Alb went down first but when I tried to follow him
“Oh, not you dear. You wait here.”
