Scarlett's POV:
The next morning, we were up and walking the Scorch again. It was blazing hot. We had scarves wrapped around our heads to protect us from the sun, but the heat was blistering. After a couple hours, we eventually came to a city. But this place looked like it hasn't had inhabitants in years.
What used to be tall buildings, were now just rubble. Or some close to collapsing.
"I think we're in bloody hell. Always thought you'd end up here Minho, but not me," Newt said.
I snorted.
We continued walking until we heard a whirring in the distance. We all looked up and saw a berg from W.I.C.K.E.D flying closer to the city.
"Quick everybody hide!" Thomas yelled.
I dove under a piece of rubble, along with a few others. We watched the berg fly overhead. Once the coast was clear, everybody climbed out.
"We have to be careful. They could easily find us when we leave here and are out in the open desert," Thomas said.
We soon left behind the city and continued on in the open desert. We made it to the top of a sand dune, and were checking out what was ahead of us. Nothing. It was just sand. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Winston swaying. Then he collapsed.
"Winston!" We all yelled and rushed to him.We found a large rock that would keep us cover from the sun. We layed Winston down, then sat down ourselves. We hadn't left with much when we escaped W.I.C.K.E.D, so we had very little water. We preserved everything we had, only taking a small sip, every little while. I watched as Thomas walked off with Teresa to go talk. I had been kind of uneasy about her since the W.I.C.K.E.D facility. I don't know why.
All of a sudden, I jumped at the sound of a gunshot behind me. I whipped around and saw Newt wrestling Winston to the ground. I ran over and grabbed the gun out of Winston's reach.
By the time Thomas and Teresa had made it over, Winston had calmed down.
"What the hell Winston! Why'd you do that!"
"I'm infected, and it's only getting worse."
He lifted his shirt to reveal a dark purple wound in his abdomen, with veins sprouting from it.
"That's from when they grabbed you in the building, isn't it?"
"It's already taking over my brain. And I don't want to hurt any of you. This isn't the way I want to die," he coughed out.
"So you grabbed the gun," I said mournfully.
"Please! I don't want to end up like them."
I looked over at Newt. We both nodded.
"Okay everybody get up and start walking, we'll catch up," I called to the group.
They tried to object, but I wouldn't let them. They all started walking.
Newt and I knelt down next to Winston. I placed the gun in his hand.
"You were a good guy Winston."
"You really were man."
"Thank you. I'll be with Alby and Gally now."
"Bye mate."
Newt and I stood up. I had tears in my eyes and so did Newt. We took one last look at Winston and started walking away. We quickly caught up to the group. We were walking for a few minutes when we heard it. The gunshot that pierced the silence. We all stopped dead in our tracks. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened them I saw Newt with his head down. I squeezed his shoulder, and we continued walking. Now we were down to eight. Eight gladers that are now alive.
