Loud music played right next to my left ear. I woke up screaming.
''Shhh! Lizzy, you'll wake mum and dad!''
My brother bent over me, a wide grin on his face. I scanned the room to see where the music was coming from. On the pillow next to me lay a case with some kind of black turning plate on it.
''Yea, don't you think they'll rather wake up over that music?''
Graham looked thoughtful for a moment and then turned a knob on the strange case that turned the music down a bit.
''What is that thing anyway? '' I asked
''That is a record player, '' he said proudly, ''we learned about it in muggle studies. That's my birthday present for you. It was really hard to sneak it in the house you know. You must be careful that it'll not be seen by mum and dad. Oh, and Bentley'' he added.
I took a closer look at the record player. It was green with multiple stickers on it that seemed to be band logos. I didn't know most of them but one I knew to be Queen a band my brother showed me a year ago.
''Wow thank you, that's pretty cool actually. You have to show me how it works later.''
''I knew from the moment we were learning about this at school that I had to get it for you so you can throw away that musty old radio. Now put on some nice clothes we're going to Diagon Alley today.''
And with that he left my room and headed downstairs. I realized that he was already dressed up and I still wore my pyjama. I put on jeans a blue top and my old converse. My parents hated it when I wore them. They would always say I looked like my family had no money but that just made me like the shoes even more.
As I jumped down the stairs taking three steps at a time I let out a surprised squeak. My dad sat at the table reading the Daily Prophet. Normally he would be at work when I got up. I felt hope rising within me. Maybe he hadn't forgotten my birthday this year – but that hope was smashed down when he started talking.
''Elizabeth, your Hogwarts letter arrived this morning. It was about time. Thought it would never come. Anyway I have to go to the ministry now Lucius must be wondering where I am. Your mother is sick, nothing dramatic, but she wanted to give you something so I guess you should go upstairs.''
Not even letting me say something in response he apparated with a loud crack. I opened the letter as I sat down and read:

A cough escaped my mouth as I stepped through the fireplace at Flourish and Blott's. Graham was already waiting for me impatiently tapping his foot on the floor. The shop wasn't that crowded. Long shelves of books lined along the walls and the large room was rather poorly lit. Both Graham and I checked our lists for the books we were going to need for this school year.
My shoulder hurting under the heavy weight of the books in my bag I stepped out into the alley. A warm breeze tickled my nose and a smell of fresh pastries wafted from the bakery. I paused for a moment and admired the beauty of the street with its little shops and the people hurrying around. Suddenly the bag seemed to become even heavier and I nearly fell over but my brother came out of the shop right in time to catch me. The weight of his own bag didn't seem to bother him the slightest.
