It was dark inside the carriage.

The black velvet surrounded us like a blanket blocking out the sun. Mother insisted we take a fancy carriage, I had never been in one this nice before.
All we were told is that we were being taken somewhere. A nice place. A safe place. But what could be safer from the home I knew?

The steady trotting of the horses pounded down onto the cobblestone road and the carridge jolted.

"Are we nearly there yet mother?" I questioned itching my leg as the woolen material scratched it.

"Almost there darling," she whispered so only I and my brother Ned could hear her.

The silence was thick as little to no sunlight shone into the carriage. My older brother Michael huming a tune we both knew so well.

The carriage came to a halt and the doors were opened by a short man in a long flowing waistcoat and white shirt.

"Here we are children," mother said as she ushered us out. I stepped out and was faced with a large building stretching for what seemed like miles across. The metal gates painted black and tiny stones under our feet.

I turned to Ned who looked just as scared as I was.

"M-Mother, what is this place?" He questioned, his hands shaking violently. I placed my own tiny one in his and he squeezed it gently. Our mother simply didn't reply. Except she walked up to us holding a brown paper bag. She kneels down to our level and opened it to reveal two pieces of string with silver pendants on. On those pendants were carved a list of numbers.

Placing one around my kneck, it read,

'36738'

She did the same to Ned that read,

'45845'

"I want to go home mother." I said in protest, "Michal, take me home!"

"I can't," he said softly placing his hands onto my shoulders.

"Why not!" I exclaimed, "you can do everything! You can climb trees, you can whistle, you can even make daisy chains!"

I didn't like this new place. It was unfamiliar and big. Cold and dark. Nothing compared to our little cottage in the countryside.

Michal paused for a second.

"If you could have one wish in the world, what would it be?" He questioned. I thought.

"To live with you...forever." I said plainly. He smiled down at me. Getting on one knee he looked me in the eyes.

"When I get older, I will come and find you, wherever you are in the world. Britan to Africa or the giant land in the sky and we can. I will be there for you. Always."

"Promise?" I questioned holding out my pinky. He chuckled a little wrapping his pinky finger around mine.

"Promise."
