Human au

"Hey." A cute blond boy with ice blue eyes popped his head out above the white garden fence, placed right behind the new house.

The moment he laid eyes on me, his face lit up with dimples and a toothless grin. I was homeschooled, so it was weird to see another kid actually be glad to see me.

"Finally, a kid! The last neighbour was sooooooo boring, threatened to use his walking stick as a cane if I walked on his lawn again. I'll never understand why old men like lawns so much." He commented, not even bothering to wait for me to reply.

"Ha, my old neighbour was exactly like that! Except he had an actual cane... no wonder his grandchildren never came to visit." I smirked, glad to actually have a friend. I mean, we were friends, right? I wouldn't know, I've never had any before.

"Yeah! Name's Keefe Sencen. It's kind of weird talking to someone my age... I've been homeschooled all my life, so I've never actually had any... umm, friends." He introduced, blushing and leaning forward. Apparently, the word 'friend' was as foreign to him as it was to me.

"Nice name, mine's Sophie Foster! Me too, by the way. I don't think I'll ever go to a proper school." I grinned, beaming at first but getting a little sad as I said the last few words.

"It's nice meeting you, Foster. But I have to go! Innocent, defenceless people need my help!" He announced, pumping his fist into the air and winking at me. He slowly crawled away from the fence.

"Wait!" I yelled, not willing to let my new friend go. I mean, I barely even knew him! Did he really have to rush off somewhere, just when we were hitting it off?

"What people?" I shouted to his retreating figure, wishing I was tall enough to lean over the fence and yank him back.

He paused, standing still, as if debating whether he should tell me something life-changing. He turned around and slowly strolled back to the fence, smirking.

Without warning, he grabbed the top of the fence and hurled himself over, jumping and landing centimetres away from me. Keefe somehow managed to land on his feet without breaking his spine; I was mildly impressed.

He looked so proud, so I decided not to tell him that the fence was less than half a metre tall.

Keefe took a step closer to me, cupping his hand over his mouth, which he confidently placed less than a centimetre from my ear.

He took a deep breath, just for dramatic effect, and whispered in a low voice, "Well, don't tell anyone... but I need a sidekick. You can be my sidekick! And if you haven't worked it out yet, even though I've made things very obvious... I'm Batman."

He somehow managed to keep a straight face. Very talented.

"Oh? Then what would my super secret superhero name be?" I asked, crossing my arms and narrowing my eyes at the arrogant, delusional boy in front of me. I was so pissed off- a sidekick? Not in a million years.

"No, your super secret super sidekick name would be Robin. But you're a girl, so maybe Robina?" He thought, rubbing his non-existent goatee. "Y'know, 'cos I'm Batman and all."

I scrunched up my nose, what he just said basically confirming my theories about him being delusional. "You don't look like Batman, but sure. I am so not gonna be Robina, though. I was thinking something cooler- how about the Moonlark?" I suggested, proud of my quick thinking and cool name.

The boy paused for a moment, before nodding. "Not very traditional, but sure. Off we go, my superhero senses are tingling!" He hopped over a fence, not the fence between our houses, but the fence to my backyard. He started running around like a caffeinated chipmunk, waving his arms around and making dramatic sound effects like "WHOOOOOSH!" and "ARRRRRGHHHHHH!"

"And remember," He added, turning around, apparently exhausted from all that drama, "I'm Batman, so if you ever need any help, I'm always here."
