Eliza Woods was racing down the ministry halls. She was late. Again. No, not late. She still had 1 minute and 48 seconds to make it. The trouble is Eliza worked in the healers department, which was at the complete other end of the ministry from the floo entrance.
58 seconds.
She hadn't meant to be late, especially not after her last warning. The head of the department had already been in a foul mood that morning after her kids' babysitter had cancelled at the last minute. A coworker had also bumped into her whilst joking around, causing her to spill her tea all over the important documents. Then, to top it all off, Eliza decided to show up on the busiest day a good 10 minutes late. She was given a 15-minute lecture after that about the importance of time management and teamwork and a load of other important things that Eliza could not remember. She had completely zoned out after five minutes.
35 seconds.
She had set 3 separate alarms to prevent this exact situation from occurring and even went to bed earlier than usual. Except this hadn't really gone to plan. Just before going to sleep, Eliza decided it would be a grand idea to read a chapter before bed. It was not. One chapter lead to another, and then another, and another. By the time Eliza had finally put the book down, it was half past two in the morning, which is how she managed to sleep through all three alarms. Instead of waking up at 07:00 like planned she had woke up at 08:45 leaving Eliza with 15 minutes to get dressed, washed, pack her bag and to grab a quick chocolate biscuit as breakfast on her way out.
10 seconds.
Eliza sprinted up the stairs, taking two at a time. She could still make it. Her raven black hair was covering half her face, having come out of her bun during her frantic running. She had no time to push it away. She was nearly there! Eliza slammed open the door, startling the others, and sank into her chair like a deflated balloon. She had made it.
"You're late, Miss Woods."
Eliza spun around, clearly surprised and quickly checked her watch. The watch was battered and old, but it meant the world to Eliza. Her godfather, Remus Lupin, had gifted it to her on her 17th birthday, and since that day, she has refused to take it off. The watch was surprisingly resilient. It had survived camping in the forest for a year, the war, all her time training at St Mongo's and her general clumsiness.
"Only by 15 seconds, Angie! I know for a fact you've been later than that before." Eliza replied, still panting from her run. "Besides, there's no aurors currently out in the field, so there's no emergency."
Eliza worked at the healers department in the ministry. It was a fairly new department. They mainly specialised in healing the aurors after they returned from various missions and assignments and so were placed just down the corridor from the aurors team. It was quite frankly ridiculous how many times they had to treat them. Honestly, it's like they had zero training. The aurors always came in with a large variety of injuries, always making far more fuss than necessary. Harry Potter was definitely the worst. Eliza swore that boy was in here with a different injury every single day.
"Don't call me that." Exclaimed Angela Perez, the head of the healers department, in her usual clipped voice. "The Minister would like to see you immediately."
"Me? What for?"
Perez sighed and rubbed her temples. "How should I know." And with that, she left to go check on the potions cabinet.
"Ooooh, what did you do now?" Asked Theo playfully as Eliza quickly fixed her hair to look more professional in front of the Minister.
"I haven't done anything." Replied Eliza, "Besides who ever said I was in trouble? I could be getting a pay rise, or a promotion, or both!"
