The triplets were all natural troublemakers. Bex's outburst at the table wasn't unusual (for any of them, really - it just happened to be Bex tonight), but Lex knew enough to tell that after it, the mood had been killed.
"Hey!" Lex shouted. "ARE WE DOING THE SAME THING TO THAT KEEFE GUY TOMORROW?"
Kesler sighed. "Yes, but Elwin and I -"
"Um, no, actually," Dex interrupted. "We're not."
Kesler raised an eyebrow. "Why would you say that, Dex?"
"Keefe . . . left," Dex said.
Kesler set his cup down with a thunk. "What?"
At that, the entire table went quiet - even the triplets stopped banging their dishes around.
"Sophie hailed me earlier," Dex mumbled, "and said that Keefe left her a note."
Lex couldn't help but feel a little bad; he knew how much time Dex and Keefe had spent together over the last few days. It couldn't exactly feel good that a friend like that hadn't even bothered to talk to you about something like this.
"No one else?" Juline asked.
Dex shook his head. "Not that I've heard."
"I'm sorry, honey. I know you hoped he wouldn't do this."
"I should've known," Dex muttered. "I could've done something about it!"
"No, Kesler said. "You can't blame yourself for this."
"I can, actually," Dex said, looking down. "I just need some time to think."
Dex left the table and practically bolted to his room.
And that was the end of dinner.
