He grumbled that night when he had to hear more about his siblings' ability lessons.
Apparently, neither Lex nor Bex liked their mentors.
Rex couldn't help but think, Oh, at least the two of you have abilities - and are going to keep them.
He knew it was a mean and jealous thought.
But sometimes he couldn't control his thoughts, and he wanted to work on that.
Maybe he'd get around to it someday.
He tuned out as Dex started speaking about his visit to Sophie, imagining worlds where he did have an ability, or where you weren't scorned if you didn't have one.
Rex squeezed his eyes shut, wishing his world away.
But no such luck.
When he opened his eyes, he was still in the same old room, Dex continuing on about how everyone was affected by Keefe's abrupt departure.
Rex sighed.
"We were all there except for Glimmer. Well, and Tam, of course."
"Tam didn't go?" Juline asked.
"Linh said she invited him, and that he said he'd think about it, but he never showed up. No one's really sure why."
"He and Keefe are more alike than we know," Kesler noted.
"Wait, how alike are they?" Rex asked, sitting up straighter.
"Well, they've had this feud going on ever since they met," Dex said, laughing. "It's actually been pretty funny."
"What do they have in common?" Rex pressed.
Kesler, Juline, and Dex all shared a glance. "Rex, what are you thinking?" Juline wondered.
"Well, if they're so alike, then why don't we use Tam to find Keefe? If they're that similar, then they might go to the same place."
"Oh, they're not that similar," Dex inserted. But then Juline threw him a sharp look, and he shrunk under it.
"That's a good idea, Rex. Dex, didn't you have another meeting with everyone tomorrow, to regroup and try to plan something?"
"Um, yeah. Yeah," Dex mumbled.
"Why don't you bring it up to Tam then?" she suggested. "He'll be there, right?"
"I think so. I mean, he should be. We don't really know what's going on with them. He's . . . kinda hard to read right now."
"Well, he's had a long month or so. Cut him some slack, okay?"
"Yeah, fine. I can do that. I'll let you know how it goes." At this, he addressed Rex directly, and while Rex was tempted to roll his eyes, he nodded.
"Can I be there?" he asked. He seriously needed something to do.
"No," Kesler interrupted. "I want you to come with me to the shop tomorrow, okay? While Bex and Lex's mentors come over."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I'll be your mentor for the day, how about that?"
Rex brightened a little. Finally, something his siblings wouldn't be able to do.
