I whip around towards the door. I should have locked it.
"Sage?" I heard someone call out.
"James?"
"Yeah, and Sam. Sage what's going on? What just happened?" I could hear the desperation in his voice.
"Well, I--we, really-- were attacked by what I think are wolf people. I'm honestly not positive. Oh, and they can fly." I answer, running my hand through my hair.
"Sage, you have wings." Sam said, as though I couldn't tell.
"I know, crazy right?" I offered.
"This isn't a joke. Why do you have wings? Where is your mom? Does she know? this is so confusing... And why didn't you tell us?" James groaned, looking at me with wide eyes. Well I have to have a little sympathy. He wasn't good with drama like this.
"I wasn't joking." I answer. "And I don't know, I wish I knew, and yes... And I'm sorry." I listed, closing my eyes. Then I open them again as I feel arms around me. Were they arresting me? Well they can try--
"You saved me. Us. Everyone. And you're not safe here. We need to get you safe." I hear Sam's soft voice in my ears. I relax.
"Well you're taking this surprisingly well," I respond, hugging her back.
"Well, I read fantasy. I literally plan for what I need to do if stuff like this happens. And honestly Sage, you're going to have to leave. You're not safe here anymore."
"I know," I whisper.
"We'll help you pack," Sam decided. James nods, looking stunned. He doesn't read as much as we do, I guess.
"Thanks," I said gratefully. "I have to look for something, though. In my moms office." I look Sam in the eye. I hating leaving her.
"We will take care of everything else," she promised.
I nodded and went back into my moms office, looking through the files. Passports, report cards, work stuff. I grab my passport before opening the other file cabinet that was right under the previous on. More work stuff, school forms, birth certificate, Itex. Huh.
What's Itex? I didn't have time to look through it so I grab that file as well. Just to be safe I grab the birth certificate file too. I check in the other cabinets, finding nothing. One of them is empty. So shutting them, I grab the chosen files and head out.
I go into the living room to see Sam putting both my wallets into a backpack, the one that I carry with my metro card and another with my life savings. James is busy bringing her things: my phone, my phone charger, and extra change of cloths, a rain jacket, a pocket knife, a travel first aid kit, a compass, food, a water bottle, and too much to name right now. I hope I can carry it.
"You're going to get lonely," James tells me. I blink in surprise as I put the files into my bag.
"That's the least of my worries."
"Hygiene!" Sam blurts out, running into the bathroom and returning with a toiletry travel case. I laugh.
"Thanks, Sam. And you too James. Really, you don't know how much you guys mean to me," I attempt. I'm not good with goodbyes.
"Just come back. And keep in touch. We will report what we can to you," she answers, giving me a long hug.
"Thanks." I hug her back, closing my eyes.
Finally, we let go and I look at James. "I'll miss you guys."
"You too," James answers.
Sam goes to look for tissues.
James comes over. I hold out my arms to hug him, and we embrace for a while.
Then Sam comes back, and we go to the roof. Not sure what else to do, I give them a group hug, shrug on the jacket I was carrying, swing my bag on to my shoulder, and fly off.
