Chapter 5- Battle

Abbie looked at Andy. The wind blew back his hair and made him look strong, like a warrior. She stood up straighter and held her head high.

“You ready?” He asked, looking at Abbie. She nodded.

“Good. Just stick close to me and don’t do anything reckless,” He warned, his icy blue eyes staring straight into hers. Abbie nodded again.

“I didn’t plan on doing anything else,” She told him nervously. He laughed and shook his head.

“I’ll be right here the entire time. You’ll be fine,” He smiled, starting to walk again. She fallowed him, starting to prepare herself. Her ears were forward and ready. She took long, high graceful steps and elegantly held her head high, ready to pin back her ears and bare her teeth at any moment.

The facility was coming closer and closer with each long stride she took, and the faint sent of demons was slowly becoming clearer to her. She pinned back her ears and barred her teeth, crow hopping with excitement. The stopped at a hill just before the prison. It seemed strangely quiet and unprotected. Abbie wouldn’t let her guard down. Andy looked at her and placed his hand on her shoulder. He nodded to her and took off at a run. Abbie was close behind him at an aggressive trot, then quickened to a slow canter and kept up with him easily. As they neared, they could see a fence. Abbie could easily jump over it, and the others could climb it without a problem. Andy motioned for her to go ahead and she nodded, falling back. When she was a good distance behind the rest of the group, she quickened her pace, increasing to a gallop in a matter of seconds. She shortened her stride as the fence grew closer and closer. Ashley and Andy were half way over it, the rest were closely in tow. She pushed off of the ground with her powerful hind legs and leaped into the air, tucking her legs in tight to her body to prevent scratching them. She extended her front legs and tucked in her back as she came closer to the ground in front of her. She stumbled when her front hooves touched the ground and tumbled over. She shook her head and stood up. She soon regained her composure and held her head as high as it could go, her ears flat against her head and teeth barred. She trotted back towards Andy and he motioned for her to fallow him inside. She found it strange how the door was left open and looked around, taking in all of her surroundings as they moved along.

Inside it reeked of demon. The smell was so strong it would’ve made Abbie gag if she was a human. She fallowed behind Andy quietly. If she had been any closer to him, she would have been part of his clothes. They heard screaming and turned a corner. A cell with a group of people stood up when they saw them. By the look on their faces when they saw Andy and Ashley, they were part of the Army. Andy motioned for Abbie to kick the cell open. She nodded and smashed the door with her powerful back hooves. It opened after a few, powerful kicks. The people ran out and joined the back of the group. Abbie admired how dedicated they were, joining the army to help on their own rescue mission. She saw how dedicated they were, which made her want to do better.

She fallowed Andy, but stopped suddenly. Something wasn’t right. She heard hard, heavy foot steps.

“Andy, I hear them,” She whispered. Andy nodded and motioned for the rest of the group to raise their weapons. They obeyed and charged through the hallway, turning the corner to see three huge soldiers of the Wretched. They stank with the horrible sent of demon and wore masks with skulls on the front. Abbie figured they were around 7 feet tall. She slid to a stop and narrowed her eyes. They stared at her, she stared at them. Andy and Ashley stepped forward, weapons raised and ready to strike. Abbie raced towards the demons, head low. She slid to a swift stop and spun around, kicking one of the demons in the stomach. Andy and Ashley fallowed her lead, attacking them. The other soldiers fallowed their leads and soon the demons were on the ground.

“Be careful,” Andy warned, “They aren’t dead, just knocked out. We’ll have to hurry or we’ll have to fight them again. Abbie looked at the closely, then widened her eyes. The very look at the cloaked figures and their huge weapons sent chills down her spine. She quickly fallowed Andy to another cell and kicked it open. After several hard strikes and a little help from Ashley, the door opened and another group of their captives filed out. They quickly ran to their formation and nodded to Andy, telling him they were ready to go. They came to a third cell and gasped. The people in this cell were battered and bloody. Andy was so mad that he was able to open the door on his own. The captives could barley lift their heads and smile. Abbie rushed in and touched each one, the wounds glowing and disappearing every time.

“Sweet,” Ashley grinned as Abbie healed the last one and walked out. She smiled a horsie smile at him, then moved on to the next cell, which was empty.

“Are there any of you left in this building?” Andy called.

“No. Most of us were moved. We’re just the newer ones,” One of the prisoners exclaimed. Andy nodded and turned, motioning to the others to leave. Abbie looked back at the prisoners. The tortured ones kept their heads down. They looked traumatized and frightened. It made her sick to think that such powerful creatures could take advantage of humans that were no match for their strength. As they walked passed the demons they had defeated before, she felt something grab her leg. She tried to pull free, but the grip tightened. She looked down and saw that one of the monsters’ hands was wrapped around her leg.

“Andy,” She said nervously, trying to shake the hand off before he could break her leg. Andy and Ashley turned back. With a swift movement, Ashley chopped off the arm of the demon with a knife Abbie hadn’t seen him with before, and Andy pried the fingers off her.

“Thanks,” She whispered. Andy winked at her. For extra measure, Abbie kicked the hand and cantered out of the building, quickening to a fast gallop as she neared the fence. She leaped over it, this time landing gracefully. She helped the soldiers climb over and they were off, running towards camp. Abbie waited until Andy was over the fence before she left.

“Andy?” She asked, her voice sounding higher than usual.

“Yes?” He asked, looking at her thoughtfully.

“Well, it’s just that it seemed pretty easy freeing those soldiers.”

Andy smiled. “That’s a good thing! It means we’re just that awesome.”

“No, I mean it was almost too easy.”

Andy’s expression changed, “I know what you mean.”

“Do you think they’re planning something?”

He rubbed his chin. “It’s likely. We’ll have to up our skills and start having people stand guard.” Abbie nodded, though she didn’t feel safer.
