Chapter 14- A Look into the Past
“So… Jinxx said something about a planet exploding?” Jake asked, his eyes eager. He and Abbie had been walking around for a while. Abbie was trying to avoid going back as much as possible, and Jake refused to leave her no matter what she said or did. She didn’t mind his company, though. She had gotten to know everyone else but Jake. He interested her, partly because he seemed different from everyone else.
Abbie nodded. “Yeah. My captors had blown up a lot of planets, I’ve heard. I only know of one, though,” she said quietly. He looked at her thoughtfully.
“How do you know for sure?” he asked. He seemed just as interested in her as she was him. He looked at her when she spoke to him, and took her seriously. She liked that. She hated when people shooed her off because she was younger or smaller than them.
“It’s a long story,” she replied.
“We’ve got time.”
Abbie sighed. “I was five years old. It was as normal as any other day. I went outside to play with the other foals.”
“There are more of you?”
“Not anymore,” she whispered, keeping her eyes on the ground. “We were playing tag. I was always the fastest, and my best friend was it. I ran from her into the woods, my favorite place on the planet.
“Planet?”
“Yes, planet. It was small, much like earth, only about the size of the United States. Anyway, I ran way ahead in the woods. A group of men surrounded me and shot some sort of dart at me. It made me fall asleep, but I was awake long enough to try to fight them off. I might’ve been fast, but I wasn’t as tall or strong as I am now, and they took me to their ship.”
“Ship?”
“Space ship.”
“A space ship?”
“Yes. A space ship. When I woke up, I saw a big window with my planet in view. They blew it up right there in front of my eyes, along with everyone I knew and loved.
“Why’d they take only you?”
“I still don’t know,” she whispered shaking her head and closing her eyes. She glanced up at the sky as if she was trying to hold back tears, but she didn’t have any tears left to cry over them.
“Man, Abbie. I’m so sorry. I had no idea,” Jake whispered, placing his hand on her muscular shoulder.
She shook out her mane and snorted, trying to regain her composure. “Don’t be. It isn’t your fault. I hate that man that did that, though. We were a peaceful species, everyone knew everyone and no one fought about anything. We were all happy and had never had any contact with any other planets. I just don’t know why he did it, but I hope his killing streak will someday stop.”
Jake nodded. “I second that.”
“Jake?” Abbie asked, stopping..
He turned to her. “Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For letting me talk to and understanding me.”
“It’s nothing.”
Abbie smiled. “You ready to go back?” she asked, nodding towards the direction of camp. He nodded and fallowed her back.
When they got back, Andy was mad. No, Andy was way passed mad. He glared at her, and she flashed him a nervous, horsey smile.
“What was that?” he asked.
“What was what?” she smiled innocently.
“Keep it up and I’ll move you into my tent.”
Abbie’s eyes widened. “Keep what up?”
“You running away! Acting clueless! I thought Jake had eaten you, or something!”
Abbie looked at Jake. “You thought he ate me?”
“He has a big appetite,” Andy explained with a shrug, his anger disappearing for a moment. Jake shrugged and nodded, and Abbie laughed. Maybe he wasn’t as mad as she had thought he was.
“I’m going to have to keep a better eye on you, though. You’ve been kidnapped and ran away twice. You’re moving into my tent.”
“Seriously?” Abbie whined.
“Seriously. I’ll have Ashley bring your stuff. Now go,” he ordered, pointing to his tent flap. Abbie sighed and shrank down to a human. She waved good bye to the other guys and walked into his tent. She sat on the floor and rested her head on her hand. It seemed like every time she saw Andy, he had a different emotion. The closer she got to him, the less she knew. He was as complicated and as interesting as an old book.
