If Jake had to choose a regret, a regret that had been lingering in his mind for a while, it would have been letting you leave. It would have been seeing you hesitantly drawl your words, accompanied with teary eyes and quivering lips but not being able to do anything about it.
"Do you want me to go? I can stay," You state, waiting for the man across you to reply. But he couldn't say anything.
Tears were flooding your vision. "Jake, tell me if you want me to stay." Quickly wiping the stray tears streaming down your cheeks, you kept looking at him for an answer. "I'll stay if you want me to."
"You just can't stay because of me, [Y/N]." Jake manages to croak out. "I think you need to go, it's a good job opportunity. You can't miss it."
But that wasn't what I wanted to hear, you thought.
Tears continue to blur your vision, but you can't even bother to wipe them dry at this point. "I think it's best that we break up then."
The moment he heard those words, it felt like pain immediately shot up his entire body. His resolve was crumbling, barely even staying intact. He could almost feel tears blocking his vision.
If he could've just held on to you that day. If he could've just kept fighting for you.
If he had to regret something for the rest of his life, it would be that. But it would be his last.
I won't let it happen anymore, he thinks, sprinting into the airport.
He tries his best to sprint, trying his best to find you quickly. His vision flickers to every corner when a loud voice snaps him out of his trance.
It's your flight.
He's never felt so panicked before, so disoriented. He needs to find you, there's no other way. Letting you leave was his biggest regret, but not doing anything to fix it, would be his last.
Finally, he spots you. As you were about to drag your suitcase towards the dragged-out line, he yells your name.
"[Y/N]!"
You turn your head, eyes widening at the man's appearance in front of you. Your mouth hangs open, scanning him from eye to toe.
Pursing your lips, you try your best not to cry. "What are you doing here?"
Jake grasps on his knees in exhaustion. But he quickly lifts his head to meet your gaze. "I came here to say something to you."
Your vision shifts to the line that was quickly decreasing. "Hurry up, I need to board the plane soon."
But he continues to look at you with those eyes, staring back at you with a melancholic gaze. He isn't supposed to be happy, but just seeing you in front of him, he feels as if his chest is bursting with joy.
But is this the last that he's going to see of you?
Jake reaches for your wrist. "I want you to stay."
You saw it coming — the look that he gave you, the nervous stance that he held as he tried to confidently speak out his words.
You've wanted to hear these words all along. But wouldn't it be too late?
"Convince me." You mutter, a small smile threatening to rise from the corner of your lips.
He takes a deep breath as if trying to compose his thoughts. "I don't see a future with anybody else but you. That's why I'm here." Your heart immediately starts beating faster upon hearing those words slip out of his lips.
You don't say anything, but from the corner of your eye, you could see the line almost ending. "But if you didn't see a future with anybody else, then why did you go? How could you just let me go like that? Like it didn't even hurt you?"
Jake lifts his hand to wipe the stray tears from your cheeks. "I knew it would be a better opportunity for you. So I thought I had to let you go." He pauses. "You know that I love you, that's why I did that."
Stop. Stop. Stop.
The heavy feeling from your chest immediately diminishes, as if carried away by the wind. "Just shut up and kiss me."
He smiles and immediately cups your face, meeting lips with yours. You've missed this man. You've missed his hugs, his kisses, and everything about him.
Jake knows that it's an enormous world out there. Once you step into that plane, the both of you would be separated by vast oceans, widespread lands, and miles by what seems like forever.
He's had regrets, but this would not be one of them.
