I apologize, this chapter is a bit rushed.
Roan POV
Roan knew something was up. Gut feelings like the one he was having now... they only happened when something very, very bad was getting ready to happen.
As soon as he came to that conclusion, time seemed to slow down for a minute. His senses seemed to become more attuned to what was going on around him. In a matter of moments, Roan saw Malcom take a swift drink from his glass and wink at a group of girls, Fleamont laughing at his friend's antics, a group of fourth years a couple of tables down playing Uno, and Dumbledore glancing in his direction, looking both mildly amused and concerned, somehow. Roan wondered if the professor could feel it, too.
He glanced over at the Slytherin table, to see Tom and his gang lounging around. A few of them were pigging out on the food like most of the Gryffindors, but most of them were acting unusually... still. Like they were anticipating something. Tom himself was politely eating a small meal, but that was normal for him. Roan knew not to automatically disclude him, though. He knew for a fact that his former friend was just as good an actor as Makena was.
As his eyes slid down the table, they stopped on Azalea Malfoy, who was currently stradling the bench so she could have an easier conversation with her brother. As Roan watched, she laughed, her electric blue eyes twinkling, not unlike Dumbledore's irises. Every time he looked at those eyes, though, he could automatically spot the difference between hers and the professor's. His irises looked like the colors had been webbed together with thin, powdery ice. Azalea's, though, were the same color as blue fire; they were so vibrant, constantly flickering with both defiance and other emotions. They contrasted with her almond skin tone, which was muted under the intensity of her eyes. Unless, of course, he were to force himself to look at other features of her face, where he would then see constellations of freckles splashed across her nose and cheeks, and the small dimple on her left cheek that would show when she grinned.
Roan realized he was staring and turned back to his food, trying to stop his face from heating up. It didn't work, of course, and his shepherd's pie was probably wondering why he had turned into a tomato with eyes.
On his right, Nigel Fortescue yawned loudly. "I think I'll head up to the dorms. Does anyone want to come with?"
"Sure." Roan looked around to see if anyone else volunteered to come with them. Hardly anyone acknowledged him, only giving mumbles like "Nah, I'm good" or "Maybe I'll catch up with you". Malcom was the only one who fully responded, and he looked at his two fellow Gryffindors like they were crazy.
"Are you kidding? The party's just getting started."
The feeling that something bad was going to happen pushed its way back into Roan's gut and up his throat, this time more forcefully than the last. He managed to swallow it down, though, and said, "Nah. We'll set up the common room for when you all get back."
Fleamont, at the mention of setting up the common room, looked up and grinned. "Thanks, Roan."
Roan grinned back. "No problem. You all want the usual?"
"Of course."
Makena was waiting for him when they got to the Fat Lady. Go figure. She was leaning casually against the wall, one foot propped up. She was wearing a Gryffindor uniform, and frankly, Roan didn't want to know where she got it from.
She smiled when she saw him, eyes lighting up. Makena was so beautiful when she smiled. Really everyone was; that's why he tried pranks and did stupid stunts. It made him happy to see others happy. He did it because there was a chance that other people could see their smiles, too, and see the beauty in that person. It made Roan so sad when he realized that other people didn't see themselves how they truly were.
