Makena POV

I wandered through the halls, not really looking where I was going, because I was combing through Magical and Uncommon Snakes of the Wizarding World. Although I still didn't know where exactly the Chamber of Secrets was, although I had a good idea.

I was on the last chapter, about basilisks.

According to Most Macabre Monstrosities, "Of the many fearsome and monsters that roam our land, there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk, known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach gigantic size, and live many hundreds of years, is born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it."

I froze, then read it over again. King of the Serpents. Of course. Slytherin would've wanted the biggest and the best, most exotic snake. This must be it.

But then I frowned. I had seen a basilisk before, at camp. That description didn't sound right at all.

"Why, hello, young lady."

I jumped, and turned towards the voice. It was Professor Dumbledore. Crap, crap, crappity crap. I smiled. "Hello, sir." I shut the book with a snap.

Dumbledore smiled back at me pleasantly. "I don't believe I recognize you."

"Oh." I did some quick thinking. He was most likely going to find out, so when he asked me more important questions, he needed to believe me. Thus, I would pretend to be a terrible lier. "Well," I stuttered. "I, um... I don't usually speak up in class, sir."

"I see. Well, I was just going to have tea in my office. Would you care to join me? I love to know all about my students."

I was going to say no, but then thought better of it. He could answer some of my questions I had about... things. I kept my face fixed in a smile. "Of course, sir. That would be wonderful."

Dumbledore led me to his office on the second floor. He sat down in his big, spinny chair and I sat down across from him on a smaller, leather seat. Already, tea was prepared and the cups were arranged. Dumbledore flicked his wand, and the tea poured itself. He handed a cup to me.

"Now, if I'm not mistaken, you do not usually go here, yes?"

I pursed my lips, trying to think how this conversation should go. "Yes sir."

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow. "You are a Muggle?"

I nodded, even though it sounded more like a statement.

"So tell me, ah... what is you name?"

"Makena Iodine."

Dumbledore smiled. "A lovely name. So tell me, Makena. How did you manage to make it here?"

"I live in an orphanage that corresponds with Roan Bonner's frequently. His father was an old family friend, so I had known him for a while. When he left to come... here, he had forgotten to pack one of his books, so I had followed him to King's Cross, where I found your wizard station."

Dumbledore nodded. "Indeed. Do you know of any wizard blood in your family?"

"Not that I'm aware of, no."

"Interesting," Dumbledore mumbled, mostly to himself. "Yet she was still able to see the platform..." He looked up at me. "While I believe you are a bright, clever young lady, being a Muggle, you are not aloud to know about or be at Hogwarts. I should turn you into the Headmaster at once to have your memory erased and send you back into the Muggle world."
