You groaned into the base of your phone, pinching the bridge of your nose as you paced around your living room floor. "Sayuri, you have to put the prices on the website before someone buys it."
The woman on the other end of the line stuttered, "But what if the amount of time it takes is more than the price?"
Working with artists, though rewarding in some respects like helping support and teach them from your studio, often pulled you down the rabbit hole of the 'starving artist' who believes that they are unworthy or are just too lazy to try.
You paused, brow pinching together. "Are people bargaining your prices?"
"Uh."
"Sayuri, how much did you sell your last painting for?"
"¥12500." Even with the seemingly large number, Yen tended to appear more expensive than it was.
"And how long did it take?"
There was silence on the other end before a meek, "70 hours" whispered through the line.
You nearly screamed, feeling the anger bubbling in your stomach over one of your artists being ripped off. "That is ¥178 per hour. You should be earning at least ¥2000 an hour just to make a living."
"I— I'm sorry."
You got paid to house these artist's workspaces. Biting your lip, you paced back to your laptop and ripped it open before logging in through all the credentials to edit the sniffling woman's website. "Sayuri how long does it take you to finish a commission usually?"
"50 to 100 hours."
You opened the code, starting new lines as you typed quickly.
"You should be selling each one for about ¥220,000."
You let the code run, waiting for the edited website to appear with the new pricing on it.
"That's so much, no one will—" she stopped mid-sentence, letting silence overtake the phone call before you heard rapid clicking and a distressed hum.
"Sayuri, what happened?"
You heard a gulp. "I just got a message about doing another commission, they want to know about prices."
