People asking about the handprint on your face was never a good conversation starter. But that never stopped people from asking it anyways. A new transfer to your class asked the question that everyone, in what seemed like the entire world, avoided that morning.
"Why do you have a handprint on your face?" they had said. You could tell they didn't mean anything harsh from it. How else were you supposed to ask something like this? By not asking at all, your brain told you.
You were used to the words, but the world was supposed to be used to soulmates. You politely smiled at them and then answered their question. "It's for my soulmate."
It's for my soulmate. Still, no matter how many times you said it, it didn't change the fact that you woke up everyday, looked in the mirror, and asked yourself if today was the day you were going to get slapped.
You knew other people were thinking of that as well. After they asked, a look of regret always glazed their eyes, and then followed by a brief second where they would think of the possibilities of how someone's hand on your face could be their first touch.
Unsurprisingly, your suspicions were only confirmed when you asked your friends about it and, though they looked reluctant to say it, the words you expected came out of their mouths: "You're going to be slapped."
You wanted to be mad at them. How dare they think your soulmate's first actions with you were going to be violent? But the distinct handprint on your right cheek had only led you to that conclusion as well, so how could you be mad at the inevitable?
And as you got older, you learned how to brush it off— the lingering stares and the quick look-aways. But hearing the words again this morning, had surprisingly thrown you off and you sprialled and regressed to the thoughts that consumed your mind when you were younger.
The main factor that always concerned you was the slap itself. Would it be hard? And if it was hard, would it mean that your soulmate hated you? That was never a good way to start a relationship and it was a huge red flag to stay in a relationship. Would it be a playful slap? But what playful slap would leave a full handprint on your face? What even was a playful slap?
As you walked your usual path to your after school club, cutting through the gyms, overthinking took you away from reality and led you to wonder if today was the big day.
Were you going to meet your soulmate and get slapped?
"Watch out—"
You snapped your head in the direction of the yelling, only to be hit in the head with a ball. You fell back on your butt and groaned in pain as you held your forehead. "And the day keeps getting better and better," you murmured.
