Meant for you

You weren't the one he greeted with a warm welcome when he walked through the door. You weren't the recipient of his playful cheek kisses and sarcastic remarks. You didn't get to experience the gentle touch of his warm hands on your face or his comforting embrace. And that's precisely why it stung so much. That's the sole reason why you're hurting. You were just... there. You were his best friend, his partner-in-crime. And that's all you were. If only you had mustered the courage to express those three little words to him sooner. But alas, it's too late now. He's married with a child.

"You've been zoning out a lot lately," he remarked, grabbing another bottle and taking a swig. "Is everything okay with you?" You admired that about him, how he genuinely didn't give a damn about anyone except you and his newfound family. It made you feel special. "Yeah, I guess I tend to overthink things from time to time," you responded, half-lying. He frowned, trying to lift your spirits. "Well, whatever it is, it can't be the end of the world for you to overthink it," he stated.

"No, I guess not," you replied, fiddling with your hands. "But it's something important to me, and I've realized it a little too late." You vaguely alluded to your feelings, sighing in resignation. "But it doesn't matter. I've already let it go." You stood up and took a sip of wine. "Anyway, how are you and your wife doing?" As he smiled and joy radiated from him upon hearing the mention of his wife, a pang pierced your heart. Once again, you weren't the one making him smile like that.

"We're expecting," he declared with a giddy expression. Shock registered on your face momentarily before you quickly masked it with a smile. "That's wonderful news for both of you! Have you thought of any names yet?" He shook his head, then turned the question back to you. "What about you? Have you found someone special?" You shook your head, a tinge of sadness evident in your eyes. "I can't seem to find what I'm looking for, and I don't think I ever will, to be honest... My ideal person feels like an unattainable dream." You spoke with a mix of hope and melancholy, and his gaze softened.

"But it's okay. I can live like this. I'm content with how far I've come, and I'm determined to keep moving forward." You spoke with a touch of poetry, earning a scoff from him. "There you go with the dramatics again." His comment dampened your mood, and you shot him a glare. "Honestly, though, I'm surprised your wife can handle your stubbornness. But hey, I'm not complaining. Maybe this way, I won't be the only one carrying the weight of unrequited feelings." You smirked up at him, and he scoffed once more, downing his drink.

"I should go before I get too drunk. I have a deadline in two days. Goodnight, Toji." You bid him farewell with a smile, and he reciprocated the gesture, watching as you left the room. He couldn't help but wonder why you had been acting so strangely lately. Maybe you had found someone special? He could relate to the spaced-out and nervous behavior. It made him question if he truly knew you at all! However, when you mentioned that your dream person seemed out of reach, he took a step back and reevaluated your actions.

"You're a little too late, Y/n,"

he murmured to himself, reminiscing about all the times he had tried to pursue you. In the end, he gave up and found his wife instead. Nevertheless, he would always reserve a special place in his heart for you—the first friend, the first love, the first person to accept him for who he was. As he gazed at the ceiling, thoughts of what could have been danced through his mind. But his heart belonged to someone else, and he sincerely hoped that you would find the person meant for you.
