Chapter 1:
Allow me to introduce myself; I am Lilly Reese aka Lizzy Hays. I’m an honors student and I don’t even try. It comes to me naturally. I usually maintain all A’s, with an occasional B in geometry. I live in a 3 story house in one of the finest neighborhoods, and as lucky as I am, I would not call my family rich, just well off. My best friend is Tessa Sabec and she is the complete opposite of me socially. While she’s totally confident with herself, I on the other hand am very insecure.
That brings me back; you are probably wondering why I introduced myself with two names. Well, Lilly Reese is my real name and Lizzy Hays is my fake profiles name. I made my fake profile back in the 8th grade, 2012, because my first boyfriend broke up with me because his friends kept calling me ugly and they told him until he began to believe I was ugly himself. His exact words were “I’m breaking up with you because pretty ugly and I don’t want to be seen with you. I’m sorry.” Ever since then, I couldn’t be confident with myself. That’s why I stopped keeping it real on the internet.
Fast forward, I’m 16 and a sophomore in High School. I still run Lizzy Hays and stay active on the profile. Oh, there’s one more thing you should know. About 2 months after I made the fake profile, a guy named Troy Harrison messaged me. We hit it off within the first hour of talking and he kept complimenting the fake pictures that were supposed to be me, but I took it personally. He is so sweet and I feel so good talking to him. We flirt on a daily basis, and he always tells me how much he loves my sweet yet innocent personality. I always find myself smiling like an idiot at how he does that, because that’s all me. We haven’t made our relationship official, just two teenagers who can’t help but flirt with each other. But I know it’s more than that, I feel like he has my heart and we’re together.
I know what you’re thinking; you haven’t been honest with him, you’re hiding behind the fake profile, etc. and honestly I know and I feel so bad for letting it go on this long but I’m too scared to tell him the truth. I look nothing like the girl in the pictures, and I’m afraid if he sees the real me he will never speak to me again and I don’t think I can bear that pain. So for now, I’ll keep it real in person and unreal on the internet.
Lately I’ve been thinking about Troy a lot, and I think it’s time to tell him the truth. I don’t want to just message him and tell him “Hey, I’m fake” I want to do it in person. He only lives two states away; it couldn’t be too hard right? I’m going to message him and ask too meet.
Lizzy: Hey, I really want to meet. I have a four day weekend next week, can you meet then?
Troy: Let me check my schedule.
Lizzy: Okay take your time!
Troy: Looks like I’m open then. Where would you like to meet?
Lizzy: How about Atlanta, Georgia? It’s halfway for the both of us.
Troy: I’ll see you then! This is so exciting babe! ;)
Lizzy: I have to go, bye.
Troy: Goodbye beautiful! Have a wonderful day at school.
Oh, shit! Its 7am and I haven’t even gotten ready yet. I guess today I’ll be straightening my hair since there’s obviously no time for curling! Once I’m done straightening my hair and applying my makeup, I head over to my closet and pull out some skinny jeans and an oversized t shirt. And yes, I do get ready in reverse because hey, even if my outfit isn’t that cute, at least my face will be. I head outside and hop into my 2012 ford mustang, turn the radio on and head to school.
As I pull into my parking space I see Zach Woods across the parking lot surrounded by a group of his preppy friends, and girls of course. Zach Woods is on the top 10 hottest guys list at our school. He’s number 3 and has maintained his spot since freshman year. God, he’s so cute!
I walk into the school building and spot Tessa talking to Derrick, the guy she’s been flirting on and off with for a few months now. “Hey Derrick, may I borrow her for just a sec?” He gives me approval, like I needed any, and we walk over by my locker.
“I’m meeting Troy next weekend!” I exclaim with a big smile on my face.
“That’s great, are you sure you’re ready?”
“Yeah, he deserves the truth. He’s such a great person.”
“Do you want me to come with you, you know for moral support?”
“This is something I want to do on my own. Can you tell my mom I’m at your house when I go though? She would totally flip if she knew what I was doing.”
“Of course, you’re my best friend. I know you would do the same for me.”
“You can go back to your boyfriend now. He keeps looking over here.”
“He’s not my boyfriend! But is he really?” She winks to me and starts to laugh a little.
“Bye, Tessa!”
The first period bell rings throughout the school. I'm already late but I speed walk to my first class.
When I walk into my first period, art, everyone’s eyes are drawn to me. And this is why I hate being late! “Lilly, since you’re late and everyone already has a partner you have no choice but to work with him.” Mrs. Pratt says gesturing to the person behind me. I turn to look and it’s the one and only Zach Woods. Yay. Sense my sarcasm? Any other girl would kill to work with him, and he’s totally hot and all, but he’s popular, and I’m not. I’m smart, and I’m pretty sure he’s about as dumb as a doornail. I guess I’ll be doing all the work on this project.
“Hey, Lilly is it? How come I’ve never noticed you before?” Zach asks me while wiggling his pencil.
“You tell me, I was in at least one of your classes since the sixth grade.” I groan. Today’s going to be a long day, I can feel it.
