You wake up to an unfamiliar phone alarm going off. You grumble and turn over.
"Turn it off! And let me go back to sleep!"
The alarm turns off and you feel a gentle hand rub up and down your arm. Squeezing it slightly. You open your eyes and try to blink the sleep out of them. When your vision finally clears, you see Bucky still laying next to you. He is wide awake as if he's already been up for hours.
"Good morning Doll."
He smiles and laughs lightly.
"I'm pretty sure you don't see it that way. But Tony wants us downstairs for breakfast ASAP. He has a lot of plans today, and he likes to have the morning meeting at breakfast and then you can come back up and get dressed. You can wear one of my shirts over your tank top."
He throws you a long sleeved red shirt and you pull it over your head. It has more of that comforting cedar, forest smell.
"We should probably go downstairs before Tony comes looking for us."
You turn to look at Bucky behind you, and see him pulling his shirt over his head. You look at his body, you can't help but stare. His body is muscled and tanned, but marked all over with scars. You resist the urge to touch him.
"I am going to go downstairs, I'll see you down there."
He laughs at your discomfort and grabs a black v neck T-shirt from off his dresser, and pulls it on. It hangs off his frame perfectly. You turn and walk out the door smiling. As you walk into the kitchen you see all the other Avengers already assembled there. Tony is sitting slumped over in his chair at the bar nursing a hangover headache and a cup of coffee. You walk past him and squeeze his shoulder gently.
"He lives! After the state you were in last night I am surprised."
Tony shrugs a little, his head resting in his hand balanced on his elbow. Sunglasses on even in the naturally lit kitchen. Wanda is half asleep attempting to spread cheese on her bagel. And Steve is bright eyed and bushy tailed smiling and eating some scrambled eggs. You see the breakfast lined up on the counter. Who cooked all this?
"That would be me! I am so happy to meet you sweetheart!"
You see a tall woman enter the room with her long strawberry blond hair pulled up into a ponytail. You admire the little curl it twirled in.
"I am Pepper. Tony's wife."
She smiles and walks behind Tony and massages his shoulders a little. Tony grunts and raises his head a little in acknowledgement. You start dishing yourself up a plate.
"Well it smells amazing Mrs.Stark!"
Pepper plants a kiss of Tony's cheek and smiles at you warmly.
"Thank you Y/N!"
You smile back and fork some eggs into your mouth, and go sit next to Peter at the table. Peter nudges you gently.
"Hey, is that Bucky's shirt?"
You push him back in a friendly way.
"Maybe....Maybe not!"
He laughs and continues to eat. You hear footsteps on the stairs, you glance up to see who it is. Bucky walks into your view pushing his long hair back with one hand, in the adorable way you absolutely love. He grabs a plate off the self and piles it with food then comes and sits next to you. You can't help but feel a slight satisfaction that he chose to sit next to you. Peter elbows you and smirks knowingly. Tony stands up and rests his hands on the back of his chair, tucking his sunglasses into the neck of his shirt so they hang there a little crookedly.
"Okay gang, we have a few things to go over. Firstly we need to figure out new training schedules. Y/N, we aren't going to throw you into training quite yet. I think we will be putting you in next week."
Your mind starts to wander as Tony continues to talk. You look at Bucky who is leaning over the table a bit, listening to Tony intently. You let your eyes drift across his features. His deep ocean blue eyes, his well defined cheekbones, and his perfect full lips. You watch his tongue lick his bottom lip absentmindedly, he then bites it, his brow furrowed as he thinks about what Tony is talking about. You sit and imagine what his lips must feel like, soft and sweet, with a lingering taste of the strawberry chapstick you have seen him use.
"Earth to Y/N!"
You snap back to attention, sitting up straight in your chair. You see Tony looking at you expectantly.
"I'm sorry, I-I got distracted."
You blush a little and look down at the table. Tony smiles, entertained.
"That much I could tell! As I was saying! You and Nat are going to go over the building layout, and the weapon inventory. And...if Miss.Romanoff sees fit... she can test you on some weapons."
You nod. Slightly excited that Tony has at least given you something to do. You wish you were training with everyone else today, but Tony will put you into the rotation when he sees fit. Everyone continues to chat, and eat. Bucky leans down and whispers in your ear just quiet enough that only you can hear him.
"I just thought I would tell you that last night, I got the best sleep I've had since The Winter Soldier. So thank you. I know it might have been a little weird for you, but it helped me a lot."
You gently grab his hand under the table.
"It helped me too Buck. I have always had difficulty sleeping since the whole super soldier thing."
Bucky looks slightly shocked.
"What do you mean super soldier thing?"
Just then Nat walks up to you two.
"Hey guys, sorry to break up the party but we need to get started, we have a lot to go over today. And I really want to see Y/N's weapon skills."
You squeeze Bucky's hand quickly and then let go. You follow Nat out of the room, but you can feel the Soldiers eyes on your back as you walk away.
Hours later you walk exhausted and sweaty to the towel closet and pull out a fluffy white bath towel. You then step through the glass door on your right and enter the shower room. The linoleum floor is freezing and makes you shiver. You walk into one of the shower stalls and pull the curtain closed. Later you walk out wrapped in your towel. Walking down the hall you are so tired you can't keep your eyes fully open. Suddenly you bump up against a solid, warm wall. You jump back quickly, almost falling. But you feel strong hands grab you and hold you steady. You look up into stormy blue eyes, Bucky's eyes.
"Woah there Doll! You okay?"
He pulls you back slightly so he can look at your face.
"I'm okay Buck, I am just a little tired. Nat really wanted to test my abilities today and she didn't let me hold anything back."
Buck smiles at you. He looks you up and down and blushes when he realizes you are in nothing but a towel.
"Well I should let you get dressed. But do you think you could come to my room after? I just have some questions."
You look at him with curiosity. He walks away, your questions dying on your lips. Well whatever he wants it must be important. You go into your room and throw on an black AC DC shirt and a pair of black leggings and walk to Bucky's room. You knock gently. You hear a muffled reply.
"Come in."
You nervously walk in. Bucky is sitting on the bed reading a book. He looks up at you and smiles. He closes the thick leather volume and sets it on the small wooden table next to him. He then turns to you and pats the bed next to him. You go sit down. Your heart starts to race, and you hope he can't hear it. He shifts to look at you.
"So I'm not going to lie, I haven't been able to stop thinking about what you said earlier. About being a super soldier?"
So he didn't forget.
"I am not sure you want to hear the whole story. It isn't exactly a bedtime story."
He looks at you and you can see sadness in his eyes. And another emotion you can't quite understand, pity maybe. No something deeper than that.
"I am all ears Doll. I want to understand you. Please tell me?"
His voice is so soft and comforting. Bucky reaches over and flips off the lights, so the only source is a slight glow from Bucky's phone charging by the wall. You know he did it so that you could tell him your story in the cover of darkness.
"Well I did have a happy childhood at the beginning, I had a mother and three siblings who all looked like my mother. Beautiful black hair, green eyes, and fair skin. I had my two younger sisters and my big brother. His name was Jasper."
Your eyes start stinging as you see their faces in your mind.
"He was my protector for as long as I could remember. He would walk me too and from school. He saved me from bully's more times than I can count."
Bucky shifts a little closer to you but doesn't say anything.
"Then there were my little sisters. Delilah and Iris. They were twins. Absolutely beautiful, they had long black hair and green eyes. They were so so sweet, and had singing voices that could calm the seas on a stormy night."
Bucky sighs. And you can feel his body tense a little. As if he already knew what you were going to say next. He speaks but his voice sounds dry, and a little deeper then normal.
"What happened to them?"
You can feel tears threatening, but you continue to fight them back.
"One day, only two days after my mothers birthday. We went out to celebrate as a family since my brother had the day off from work. We went out to the fair, so my sisters could see the animals. It was an amazing summer day; the sun was shining on our backs and I could already feel a sunburn forming on my shoulders. My brother had one of my sisters on his shoulders and the other sister holding onto his hand. My mother and I were walking behind them. Suddenly there was a loud bang and people started screaming. These men in black uniforms with red skull symbols on their chests encircled us. My brother made my sisters stand behind him. But then men reached out and grabbed me. I screamed. To this day I wish I hadn't. Then maybe Jasper would still be here; they all would still be here. When Jasper heard me he tried to run to me. He tried to protect me. They killed him; they killed him right in front of me. A man snapped his neck as he was trying to shield me. Then they opened fire and I watched my family one by one fall. Their eyes going blank, like their minds just shut down. And I didn't stop screaming. My throat hurt for weeks after, because of how loud I screamed that day. Then they took me. They just snatched me up, and took me away to some military base in Russia."
You can feel Bucky shaking a little. He reaches his arm over and you let him slide it behind you.
"I'm so sorry Doll. You didn't deserve that. You brother sounds like he was an amazing person."
You smile sadly.
"He was. He was my protector. I've never felt safe; not since that day."
Bucky squeezes you tightly against him.
"Nothing is going to happen to you Doll. Not if I can help it."
You lean into him, enjoying the safe warm feeling you have. It's one of those moments when it feels like the world has stopped, and it's just the two of you. Bucky leanes so his head is resting a little on top of yourse. Shivers go up your spine and your heart does a flip in your chest.
"So what happened next. It's okay if you want to take a break for tonight. I understand how exhausting talking about those kinds of memory's can be."
You cuddle into him a little more and you hear his heartbeat pick up pace.
"I think I would like to take a break. Maybe can we finish the rest tomorrow night?"
Bucky nods, his head still resting on yours. He shifts so both of you are laying down on the bed.
"Would you maybe, spend the night again? I understand if it's too weird. I just sleep better with you here."
You turn with your head resting on Bucky's arm.
"Honestly I sleep better here then I do in my room. Your room feels a lot more homey than mine."
You look around Bucky's room. Now that you are seeing it in the light, you realize he must have made some requests from Tony. The walls are a beautiful dark blue. And the floors are a dark redwood. The only lights in the room were two large lamps kitty corner from each other, across the room. He has a large king size bed placed center against the back wall facing the door. There is a black wooden bedside table on the left side of the bed. One thing you notice is there is a beautifully painted mural of the star constellations on his ceiling. But it looks like Bucky painted it himself. You stare at them in wonder. They look absolutely amazing!
"Buck did you paint that yourself?"
You point up at the ceiling. Bucky looks up where you are pointing. He sighs in a satisfied way.
"I did paint those. When I was The Winter Soldier I spent so much time without seeing the stars. I missed the sun, and the moon of course. But the stars I missed the most. When I was young, my father used to take me outside and show me the different constellations, and name them. It's one of the few things I remember of my family, most of my memories of them are gone, but I held onto that one."
You take Bucky's hand.
"Well it's beautiful."
Bucky reaches behind you and turns off the lamp.
"Good night Doll."
He pulls the blankets around you and gently strokes your cheek with the hand of his metal arm.
"Good night Buck."
You smile and gently nuzzle into him. And you fall asleep looking at the beautiful glowing stars, and their comforting light.
