The next day was a bright and sunny Thursday, which only made Lyndsey even more determined to befriend Alexa. As soon as she was dressed, she took out her phone and texted her.
Lyndsey: Hiiii! I don't care what you say, I'm going to do whatever I can to become your freind
Lyndsey: **friend oops hahaha
Alexa (Senior Buddy!!!): Don't talk to me.
Lyndsey: But why not? We were assigned to be buddies, and I'm pretty sure buddy means "friend"
Alexa (Senior Buddy!!!): Nobody cares about their "buddies"
Alexa (Senior Buddy!!!): Go ask your stupid little friends about it, they'll tell you they haven't done shit with theirs.
Lyndsey didn't have anything to say to that, so she put her phone away with a sigh. She stood up and trudged downstairs. When she reached her destination (the kitchen, of course) her mother eyed her with a worried look on her face.
"Everything ok Lynn?" her mother asked.
"I don't know. We got paired up with seniors and they're supposed to be our 'buddies' and shit," she paused for a second to offer an apologetic look at her mother for swearing, even though she swore all the time. "I got paired up with this girl Alexa who's basically ignoring me! I hate it." Her mother looked at her with a sympathetic smile before responding.
"Okay, tell you what: I'll drive you to school today, and we can continue this conversation in the car. Now eat your breakfast, I need to call my client."
20 minutes later, they were driving to school. They sat for a few moments in silence, until her mother spoke up.
"Is she cute?" she asked.
"Mom," Lynn replied, groaning. "She's a total bitch, I haven't really payed attention to whether she's cute or not."
"Right, right, sorry," her mother said with a chuckle.
"I just don't know what to do! She keeps telling me to go away. She says she's got a reputation to uphold or something."
"Well, high school is complicated, and that's a given. I dont know what to tell you except that you've only known each other for one day. Just keep trying."
"Okay," Lynn said with a sigh. Her mother suddenly changed the subject.
"Did your father tell you we're going to a dinner party Friday night?" she asked.
"So tomorrow?"
"Yep."
"Are we all going? Like, as a family?"
"Yes, as a family. But don't worry," she said quickly after seeing how disappointed Lynn was. "They have kids. Plus, they go to your school, so you can make some new friends!"
"What grade are they in?"
"I know one's a junior and one's a senior, plus there's two who go to a different school. I don't know what grade those last two are in."
"Do you know any of their names?" Lynn asked, hoping that one of them wouldn't be a certain five-letter name starting with an "A."
"Hmmm... let me see... I think their names are Gabe, Angela, Sam, and," her mother paused for a moment to think. "Oh! Alexa. The 4th one is named Alexa."
---
Alexa was furious. Her parents had just told her they were hosting a dinner party tomorrow- with none other than Lyndsey fucking Gunnulfsen. She had spent 10 minutes trying to get her parents to call it off but she was only met with no, sweetie and this is an opportunity to make friends, Alexa. This went directly against her plan. She was going to think they were friends. That would totally ruin her image, and she couldn't let that happen.
When she got to school, she immediately ran into Lyndsey. Fuck. She glared at her and moved on, ignoring her annoying attempts to talk to her. She headed to her first class, English something or other, while she saw Lyndsey go into a room with a door marked CHEMISTRY. Not that she cared or anything like that.
---
After Chemistry, Lyndsey had a free period. She didn't really know what to do. At her old school they never had free periods- only study halls. She was not used to not having a teacher watching over her for a whole period. She wandered the halls for a few minutes until she decided to go to the library. When she got there, she realized she had made a very good decision. Alex was here, along with some other kid who looked really cool (and short). The blue-haired girl that Lyndsey had seen earlier was talking to them too. She walked up to them slowly.
"Hi Alex," she said.
"Hey Lynn! So I'm guessing you have a free period right now too? That's awesome!" he said.
"Yeah," she said, laughing. Alex jumped to his feet.
"Oh! I need to introduce you guys! Lyndsey, this is Sam," he said, gesturing to the blue-haired girl. "And this is Brian." He gestured to the short kid next to him.
"Hello, Sam and Brian!" Lynn said with a small wave. The blue-haired girl -no- Sam spoke up.
"Wait, are you Lyndsey Gunnulfsen?" she asked.
"Yep, that's me."
"That's so cool! You and your family are coming over for a dinner party tomorrow, right?"
"Oh shit! Yeah, we are."
"What's with the 'oh shit'?"
"Well, is your sister Alexa San Román?"
"Yeah," Sam said slowly with a confused look on her face.
"That means your sister is my senior buddy or whatever. She hates me. She's basically ignoring me."
"Hmm," Sam said, thinking hard. "I'll try and talk to her about it and see if she'll stop being so mean to you."
The group then talked about various things, from their interests to their most embarrassing moments.
"Holy shit you guys, I just realized how much of a difference there is between our heights," Brian said.
"Dont worry, I'm not actually this tall, I'm just sitting on my wallet," Lynn said in a sassy tone, causing the rest of the group to laugh.
As they launched into a discussion about what if Sam's natural hair color really is blue?, Alex announced that the period was pretty much over. The group said their goodbyes and went their different ways (for now). They had agreed to all sit together at lunch, and Lyndsey wondered what that disaster would be like.
