Taylor's POV
Everything has been going well. All of us are learning to sign with Owen. He is learning very quickly. Although his motor skills aren't great, it is incredible to get a response when I ask him a simple question. About a week ago I took Owen to the audiologist to get fitted with hearing aids. He didn't like them at first and he kept pulling them out. I suppose he is getting used to them now. Once a week Kayla, Owen and I see a communication specialist. We play with games and toys for an hour to help Owen learn, and help us learn how to communicate with him.
I got so wrapped up in everything involving Owen that I almost forgot about Kayla's sixth birthday, which is in four days. Three days after her birthday she will start Kindergarten. I can't believe how fast she is growing up. I wanted to do something fun for Kayla's birthday before school started, so I decided to surprise her with a trip to New York with me. Every time travel for work, I leave the kids at their grandparents house. Neither of the kids had even left Nashville before.
On the morning of Kayla's birthday I wrapped presents and made pancakes for breakfast. Then I texted my mom to confirm our plans for later in the day before waking the kids up. I sent out a tweet right before walking into her room.
"My baby girl is turning six years old! I can't believe it. I love her so much."
"Kayla," I cooed as I walked into her room. "It's a big day today."
She rubbed her eyes before sitting up in bed. "I'm officially a six year old today!" she exclaimed.
"That you are. You're getting to be as old as me!"
"I'm not that old yet," she replied giggling.
I wrapped my arms around her in a great big hug and started tickling her.
"Wait momma, do I smell pancakes?!"
"Yes you do. Pancakes with syrup, chocolate chips, whipped cream, strawberries and bananas."
Kayla began grinning from ear to ear. She jumped out of bed, grabbed my hand and dragged me downstairs. Today is going to be awesome.
Kayla's POV
Mommy made the best pancakes for breakfast. I got to top them with everything I wanted. Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Austin came over after breakfast and I got to open my presents.
"Here you go Kayla," said Grandma as she handed me a beautifully wrapped package. Grandma and Grandpa bought me some new clothes and hair clips. Uncle Austin got me a blanket with Ana and Elsa on it. I unwrapped mommy's gift last. I couldn't read the card so she read it to me.
My dearest Kayla, you are the greatest gift I could have ever asked for. You are a bright and shining star in my life. You are the craziest, most strong willed girl I know. Hope you have the best birthday ever and make joyful noise. Love, Mommy.
She told me to close my eyes while she went to get my present. A few seconds later she came back in the room.
"Open your eyes!"
Mommy bought me my very own guitar! It is pink and sparkly just like her silver one. She said that she will teach me so I can learn to play like her.
Taylor's POV
I was thrilled that Kayla liked the first half of her present. She sat down right away and tried to play us a song. I taught her a few chords, but her hands were to small to reach them. She reminds me so much of myself.
After our mini concert we all ate lunch together.
"Kayla, do you know what musicians do?"
"Play music."
"Well yes, but they go on tour. They travel around, visiting different people and sharing their music. How would you like to go on your very first tour?"
"Yes!"
"Awesome, for your birthday I arranged to have us fly to New York. We can spend a few days there and do whatever you want to."
"Yay, yay, yay!"
After I told Kayla she couldn't control her excitement. New York City watch out because here we come!
